Death of Vista
With great sadness we announce the passing of Vista during the night of
December 12 - 13, 2005.
Age was estimated at 110. She had taken up residence at her current
location on September 24, 2005, the same day as I started installing the
checked build of her identically named species-mate into a Pentium III 600
MHz machine with 320MB of memory and empty 17GB disk partition. She was no
tiny hatchling when we got her, so we estimate that she was around 30 days
old, which would make her around 110 days old at the time of death. A
native of the tropics, she just wasn't suited for Japanese winters, where
the temperature in our kitchen dropped to freezing overnight.
Survivors include, for the time being, a laptop, a second laptop, a third
laptop, and two humans. The primary laptop belongs to a different species
but frequently enjoyed drinking water from Vista's bowl when not occupying
her usual space between a human stomach and the second laptop. It is
unknown why the primary laptop never actually tried to catch the fish,
especially since it's such a colourful species. But such is life. The
third laptop is of course the one where Vista's species-mate is undergoing
installation. It is unknown whether the species-mate will survive to reach
maturity or not, but at least Japanese winters will pose no problem. With
mscorsvw.exe occupying 99% of the CPU for 80 days so far and still going
strong, the checked build's installation program is in no danger of
freezing.
The humans are still considering whether to buy a beta 2 when spring
approaches, or discontinue the keeping of tropical fish as pets.
