Re: Installing Vista on Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook
Thanks Jabez.
I have tried the reformat option, but not from disk. I will try this tomorrow.
FYI, when the machine locks, it is a total freeze - i.e. caps lock, mouse
cursor etc lock up..

Re: Installing Vista on Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook
Here is a quote from Vinnie [MS] on this issue:
-----------------------
I have seen this type error before. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to
consistently repro or figure out the root cause. I did narrow it down at the
time to a device driver issue. Basically, during the last phase of Setup
(where the progress bar just loops at the bottom), pnp was loading a device
driver and crashed (most likely a BSOD that rebooted very quickly). The
drvinst.exe is the last entry in your Setupact.log confirming that (a pnp
related binary). The garbage characters at the bottom of your
setupapi.dev.log is what makes it very familiar to me because I recall the
same thing happening on a system I was working on (there should be no
garbage characters at the bottom of that log - probably there from corrupted
memory, etc during the last write).
When Setup errors out like that and reboots, the corruption can cause other
components to fail as well. Others seeing similar behavior may have IIS
erroring out and SQM engine being started in their setupact.log. That is
also a result of setup dying (most times the same way as above) and
rebooting and getting a little further. The IIS component for Beta1 didn't
handle a setup failure/reboot and errored out. That was identfied and fixed
for Beta2.
I have not seen the original drvinst.exe failure again for a while now
(months). I'm not sure what driver/procedure was causing it (not in logs and
no repro here). I think this maybe resolved for Beta2.---------------In the
meantime, if your laptop has a built in wireless NIC, please access BIOS and
disable it and see if that works (do a format and reinstall).Sorry if this
hasn't beeen any help
