Modem connection   
I want to put my computer in another room that is air conditioned but has no 
phone socket, can I run a long cable from the other room?

Presuming you mean the phone cable, yes,

Yes, it would need to be approx 9 metres in length.

I've never used a phone cable > 12 feet (~3.6m), so I cannot predict the 
result. With a high quality cable, you should be OK.

I now have a successful connection with a 'digitor' RJ12 Modular, 12 metre 
telephone linecord.
