Any hope for the PSP?
I am building a Media Center PC at home and will have it connected to a
wireless network by the end of this week. I have read a little about these
portable media center devices and I am curious about whether or not anyone
has heard if my shiny new PSP will ever be included into the list?

Thanks,

Never as its not a Microsoft Windows based Portable Media Center - shame
though, as the screen is easily 1000 times better than any of the
Portable Media Center's out there right now, believe me, i have one!

....but on that thought...

Couldn't there be a UMD for the PSP that ran the operating system as a game?
Am I dreaming?

Re: Any hope for the PSP?
I wouldn't say never. I don't know how the PSP works, but if it has a USB
connection that allows you to save files to its MemoryStick, then you can
use Windows Media Player to build Auto Playlists for it and synchronize your
TV and music to it. I think the only thing you're not going to be able to
play on it is DRM protected content.

Re: Any hope for the PSP?
My Sony Vaio is running Windows Media Center 2005 perfectly fine. Of
course, the Sony MemoryStick music player that I bought back in 2000 would
not play WMA. I thought perhaps time had also brought wisdom for Sony.

Also, anything can be transcoded. The question was "Any hope for the PSP?".
The original poster wanted to know if they could get content from MCE to the
PSP. The answer is "yes".

Many people have converted all of the WMA to MP3 so that they can easily
play their media on their iPod. Others have converted the dvr-ms files to
regular MPEG files so they can play them elsewhere. PSP is no different
than those. Unless, of course, it can't play MPEG or MP3.

Re: Any hope for the PSP?
Thank you all for your attention to my concern.

Michael, you are very close to answering my question. Much of my concern is
whethor or not Sony and Microsoft will work together in a small way to allow
the PSP with great video quality and built-in 802.11b wireless capability to
connect to my network and stream content (music, video and TV) from my Media
Center computer. I have very limited understanding of how the typical
'portable media devices' work, but I assume it is not much different than a
media center extender. If that is the case I am aware of an XBox media
center kit which will allow the use of an XBox as a media center extender.
I am wondering is a similar kit will ever be available for the PSP. The PSP
could obviously handle such a task - it is simply a question of whether or
not Microsoft will allow it to happen.

Any thoughts?

Re: Any hope for the PSP?
I honestly don't believe Microsoft is any bit interested in furthering the
sales of PlayStation hardware. 8-) As for the 802.11b wireless, it simply
isn't fast enough to support streaming of content. You need at least
802.11g, 802.11a is better and, of course, wired is best.

Re: Any hope for the PSP?
The Portable Media Centers do not work like the extenders. The extenders
allow for streaming video across the network. A Portable Media Center is a
file-based media player that synchronizes its content with another computer.
In the case where that computer is a Windows Media Center computer, it can
synchronize television shows.

They support the "Plays for Sure" guidelines found here...

http://www.playsforsure.com/

So, in this case, the only advantage you'll get from wireless is that you
can copy the files over to the device without plugging it in.

At 11Mbps it would seem to be fast enough.
PMC's only play a maximum of 0.8Mbps (800kbps)
