Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
I am trying to setup Media Center 2005 on XP Media Center Edition, and get
the error:

UNSUPPORTED REGION -- The tuner hardware does not support the TV format for
your region. You may need to install different tuner hardware that supports
the appropriate TV format.

My tuner is the SiliconDust HDHomeRun -- which works fine, as the setup
displays video for all the local broadcast channels on ATSC (analog is no
longer in use.) The PC is a 1 1/2 year old Gateway FX530, a Core 2 Quad with
NVidia 8600 GT card.

Any suggestions?

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
Do you already have an analog tuner installed?
MCE2005 will not let you install a digital tuner which the HDHR driver
emulates unless you do.
What is your Zip code?

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
No. I've never fired up Media Center before, but after noticing the quality
of the digital broadcast signal (we get over 20 channels), I decided to give
it a try. The tuner I bought is digital only.

What is an "HDHR driver"?

My zip is 43567.

Why on earth would MCE2005 require analog?  It was dying, and now it's dead;
there are no analog broadcasts now.

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
HDHR stands for HR Home Run.

Prior to MCE2005 MCE only supported analog tuners and the requirement to
have one was not removed when support for digital tuners was added in the
MCE2005 release.

Most Cable companies will be broadcasting analog programming for many years
to come so that their customers don't have to upgrade all of the TVs in
their homes to receive digital and they might drop cable service for OTA
digital or satellite service.

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
I'm in a rural area; our only choices are broadcast or satellite; they don't
run cable out here. Getting rid of the satellite bill would let us fit a new
LCD into the budget, but it sounds like Microsoft is a bit behind the curve...

I *thought* the SiliconDust/HDHomeRun product was the best solution, but
never saw this problem mentioned on the box or in the reviews.

Is there any way to "emulate" an analog tuner enough to get MCE2005 to run,
or do I need to buy/add yet another gizmo to the box or sit on the desk?<sigh>

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
I suggest that you order an upgrade copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for $50
prior to July 10th and you will get it the end of October then you can use
your HDHR with MC.
I do not know if any TV applications other then MC work with an HDHR but I
suspect that they do, Check the HDHR website for information about them.

Re: Cannot get past TV Signal Setup
Unfortunately, that won't work for my main box, with the nice new HDHomeRun
toy (TV on any PC)...<sigh>

I had to return a brand new Vista machine, after 3 weeks of wrestling with
it, trying to get things running. Turned out Vista didn't work with my
top-of-the-line HP printer (only 3 yrs old!), and two software packages (one
a brand-new version, the other a specialized Excel add-in). When OPEN
Dialogs don't work right and some software won't even install, something is
SERIOUSLY wrong -- I sent the box back & re-ordered a desktop and laptop w/XP
Media Center, just before the supposed cutoff, in Dec 07. Looks like Media
Center is useless on both boxes...what a waste.

Short version is, I'll have to wait 'til Win7 is out for awhile, before even
THINKING about an upgrade to the main or backup box.

But, I might get a dedicated PC for media/TV when Win 7 is out. Nice to
have an OS native app, instead of yet-another-thingy, hardware or software.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. Guess I'll have to wade through
whatever 3rd party software is available.

Hi Jason,

Can you get MS to fix the database for Jackson MS (zip 39209)?

WLBT Channel 3, now on channel 7, hasn't been updated in the MS tuning
database.

Thanks,

Charlie

your best option is to post this info on thegreenbutton.com forums.
