Hi, I have HP Pavilion with Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Auto download asked me to instal service pack 3 but said to back up computer first. As this is a too hard and lack of time task I cancelled the installed. After reading this site glad I did. What is service pack 3 for? I recall problems after service pack 2 which needed a patch to fix and don't want to go through that again. It seems service pack 3 has problems too, is it necessary to install this and why? When these are downloaded where on the computer do they get placed if I need to remove it. Would it be OK to do a restore point first before downloading. If things go wrong after downloading what do i do to go back to the restore point. I always back up stuff I am working on but to do the computer I don't know how to do this nor have that kind of time. Any suggestions would be helpful. I have always (for many many years) trusted microsoft with its auto updates so would appreciated advice with this. Thanks -- compmail always learning
Go through the following links to know about XP SP3:- http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsxp/sp3/default.mspx http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/8/7/687484ed-8174-496d-8db9-f02b40c12982/Overview%20of%20Windows%20XP%20Service%20Pack%203.pdf During installation SP3 will create a System Restore Point by default.Otherwise you can also create it manually. regards, S.Sengupta[MS-MVP] compmail wrote: > Hi, I have HP Pavilion with Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2002 > Service Pack 2. In addition to S.Sengupta advice, you should know that you don't have Windows XP MCE 2002. If you have SP2 install, you have at a minimum MCE 2004 (installing SP2 automatically upgraded 2002 to 2004). My guess is that you have MCE 2005 (unless your PC if very old). You are probable looking in the wrong location for the version number, check in the MCE interface, Settings and About. The System Properties will only show the underlying XP Pro version (which is 2002). -- James Orlando (Goofy says "Hey!"), FL "compmail" wrote in message news:595E8FA7-924E-4D2C-A702-E58E50C1DF63@microsoft.com... > Hi, I have HP Pavilion with Windows XP Media Centre Edition Version 2002 > Service Pack 2.
