Closed Captioning Failing on some alalog and some digital channels
Closed Captioning is indeterminate with ATI CableCARD tuners and the current
configuration of Comcast Houston:

(Note that everything was working fine for many months between Aug 07 and
April 08, at which time Comcast made an network update)

Working with several other users, including an expert I have verified that
Closed Captioning, on Houston Comcast, works on some analog and some digital
channels but not all. (Re-stating that this is on Microsoft Vista Media
Center and ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable Turners) It seems to be random, e.g.,
it works on PBS HD, but not PBS analog, but it does work on some analog and
some HD. This test was done using several Microsoft Vista Media Centers,
including those installed on a Velocity Micro machine and a on a Dell machine.

This issue first appeared in April of 08 when Comcast Houston did some type
of a “network update,” the exact nature of which I have been unable to
determine. What I know is that Closed Captioning on certain channels stopped
working about that time. An example is Channel 60 (analog SciFi) closed
captioning comes in fine on a regular TV that has the Closed Captioning
feature, but not on a VMC CableCARD computer attached to Comcast cable.

Our analysis ascertained that the problem is certainly some type of conflict
between the signal and the ATI CableCARD TV adapter itself. It is not
dependent on whether there is a CableCARD in the slot or not. I have tried
getting help from Comcast, ATI and Microsoft and no one seems to be willing
to investigate.

Any thoughts out there?

Re: Closed Captioning Failing on some alalog and some digital channels
a few questions..
do you (or a neighbor) have a set top box and see the same behavior
with a set top box? how about a STB plugged into a tuner in MCE?

who have you worked with (who is the expert?) you mentioned several
other users.

are these SA or Motorola cable cards?

Re: Closed Captioning Failing on some alalog and some digital chan
Set top boxes from Comcast, I am told by Comcast, work fine.
My system and other systems failed at the CannonPC www.cannonpc.com lab.
These included several other PCs besides my Velocity Micro. The CannonPC lab
is about 20 miles from my house.
Also have not tired a STB plugged into a tuner. This would be a good
experiment.
These are Motorola CableCARDs, but since it still occurs without the
CableCARDS plugged in, I don't think the issue is with the cards.

Re: Closed Captioning Failing on some alalog and some digital chan
So it is cable ->STB->ATI card->VMC correct?
