MPG files come in different flavours - MPEG1 (video CD), MPEG2 (DVD
video) and MPEG4 (advanced flavours).

Real player should be able to play MPEG1 and 4 videos out of the box;
Windows media should play MPEG1 but may need add-ins for MPEG4.

So my guess is you *may* have an MPEG2 video. That requires a DVD
decoder which would have to be purchased.

Have a look at DecCheck to see if you have any DVD decoders installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=DE1491AC-0AB6-4990-943D-627E6ADE9FCB&displaylang=en

If you have any DVD decoders listed there as compatible, it could be
back to MPEG4, which FFDShow should help with :
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDshow.htm

Also check in windows media player on More Options -> File Types to
ensure MPG video is selected as a file type WMP knows about

HTH
