I'm using windows media player 10 on xp + sp2 in vmware on a linux machine. Vmware has a facility for making a linux partition visible inside xp and it works flawlessly (can read/write that partition from xp). When I open wmp and use its 'file/open' menu to navigate to this linux partition where the wmv is at, wmp can drill down the dirs just fine but when I click the wmv to play it I get the '*D1197' error; if I use windows explorer to move that wmv to say the C: drive in xp, wmp plays it no problem. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it? Or maybe even just turning on some debugging in wmp so I can see what it doesn't like about reading off of the linux partition? --

It could be that the audio hardware is either not installed in the linux box, or that XP inside VMware doesn't see the audio hardware - or even that the hardware can't be shared between the OS images. I know that it's frequently an issue when using remote desktop into a machine, that the audio is disabled locally when the RD user is using it, and that can cause an issue (for example) when trying to control windows media encoder using RD - possibly a similar scenario here.
