Re: Apple Lossless support for WMP
That's just a playback filter though, right? Does
http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemID=867
address your remaining needs/issues here... ?

Re: Apple Lossless support for WMP
Thank you, Zach, for the link. I did install the program but, at this point,
I'm not sure what enhancements I've gained. I have played one or two Apple
Lossless-encoded songs in WMP 11, but they don't get added to my WMP library
when I do, and the "import" function doesn't add them either. Perhaps I'm
missing something so, if I am, you won't hurt my feelings by just telling
me.
Thanks again,
Rick

You're right, I took my eye off the ball I'm afraid. I did a transcode
test from a ripped WAV to apple lossless in Quicktime, which iTunes
played OK but the Orban decoder can't decode.
Oddly enough though, neither can Quicktime - even though it's encoded
using QT, it wouldn't then open the .m4a for playback ("error 50").
Real player couldn't play the file *either*, so I don't know what's up
there.

Yes, I think I've made this mistake at least 3x now !
Think I'd know better by now wouldn't you <g>

The only comparable thing I can think of then is the decoder page at
Rarewares http://rarewares.org/lossless.html, there's a command line
(.exe) there, but no directshow filter.
I guess apple want to keep another proprietary format close to their
chest, as I can't see any source code at the ADN site. Have you
considered FLAC instead, or are you trying to play iTunes music in
media player ?

Neil - I since installed and tried the Orban codec myself and it will play
AAC but not Apple Lossless. I also had the following reply from Orban :-(
"No, we do not support the Apple lossless format. If we were to
support any lossless format in the future, it might be MPEG-4 ALS,
which is LPAC. This is an ISO standard now."
Rick - you also say you have successfully played Apple Lossless in WMP
(although as above, we now know Neil did not actually do so). Could you tell
us what software you used to do this or have you also mixed up AAC and Apple
Lossless (easy to do since both use the .m4a file extension). If you have
managed to get WMP to play them, I might be able to get it to add them to
the library (I have already done so even though for me it will not play
them).
Practically every other player has managed to add Apple Lossless support
(e.g. WinAmp, Mplayer, etc.) you would think someone would have followed
this up by doing so for WMP.
In answer to your question Neil, yes I want to play iTunes music in WMP (I
can do so currently using AAC complete with limited Tag support). WMP will
also play AIFF but there is (currently) no way of getting tag support for
AIFF in WMP (unless anyone knows differently).

John--
(Tale between legs) Sorry, I think I too mistook .aac files for Apple
Lossless, as you surmised. At any rate, I can't get them to play now, so
that's my assumption.
Back to the drawing board, I guess...
