multiple occurrences of all songs on CDs ripped to computer...DRM
6.3.09
HI! HELP PLEASE!
1. suddenly, yesterday (without creating a playlist in windows media player
11), when i just tried to play a CD in the CD drawer, a very long, random,
player list appeared!
why did this happen???
2. i noticed when i began to delete songs from that playlist and add songs
to it that
a. there are multiple occurrences of each song on many of the album CDs
that i ripped, without any awareness until today of the copy protect
mechanism being set by default to "on." (i turned it off, today, but of
course there is no way to get new licenses for all of my CDs that i have, all
purchased at stores or purchased from people that bought them, none of which
are burned--why would a copyrighted author like me ever take a burn?).
b. this means that for instance, when i view the path names for the first,
second, third, fourth and so on occurrances of only ONE song out of the
entire CD (all of its songs appear the same number of times within the
"artist" list) (but not all my CDs have these multiple song occurrences),
there are separate paths for each of the duplicate occurrances of ONE song!
why is that?
3. the only thing i can guess at, since i just got a different external
hard drive to do a mirror image and then backup(s) on, is that because norton
ghost imaged my drive on my old external hard drive and created a recovery
point each time it did it, that these various paths were created when the
hard drive was imaged!
4. now when i want to add one of these duplicated songs (usually 4
occurrences of each on SOME of my ripped CD collection), i am given the error
that says that i have to obtain a license from microsoft, but, when i tell it
to do it, then:
5. i see this:
"A license is required to play this file
The file you are trying to play was ripped (copied) from an audio CD.
During the ripping process, the file was "protected." This limits the number
of computers on which the file can be played.
To play the file on this computer, you must download a license (a process
known as "license migration"). A license acts an electronic key that allows
you to "unlock" a protected file and play it.
To download a license for this file, click Download License.
...
"Notes:
Microsoft keeps track of the number of license migrations that have been
performed for this content. Microsoft does not collect any contact
information (such as your name, address, telephone number, or e-mail address)
to perform the migration. For more information about the information that is
sent to Microsoft, see the Privacy Statement.
For more information about protected files and license migration, see the
Windows Media Player FAQ page."
AND, WHEN I CLICK THE BOX TO OBTAIN THE DOWNLOAD LICENSE, I SEE THIS:
"Error: Your Netscape browser does not have the "Microsoft Windows Media
Services" plugin installed."
5. but i checked, in my MOZILLA FIREFOX v 3.0.10 default browser, for that
plugin, and yes, it is there as well as that it is ENABLED. i don't use
netscape--that does not exist anymore.
6. so of course i investigated this all using the FAQs and troubleshooting
articles, but nothing helps!
WOULD YOU KINDLY TELL ME ALL OF THE STEPS BEGINNING FROM 1 ONWARD TO FIX
THIS PROBLEM? because:
i am going to install the newer external hard drive tomorrow, 6.4.09, and
then i am first going to do a mirror image of my hard drive, but not using
norton ghost 14 (unless you so advise, but it's a mess of a program), but
using retrospect 7.6, which seems more straightforward and simpler than ghost.
THANK YOU FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN PROVIDE!!!
