Actually, both issues may be related (i.e., insufficient disk space). Let's
work on only Recycle Bin for now.
When you delete /any/ file, does it go to the Recycle Bin or not?
Right-click on Recycle Bin icon on your desktop | Properties | Global (tab):
=> Is "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin..." checked or not?
=> Is "Use one settings for all drives" checked or not?
=> What value is selected in "Maximum size" section?

Re: .bak files not in Recycle Bin after compact
Please quote my entire post when you reply. Thanks. (You can snip the list
of "caveats" below, though.)
1. Open OE Help | About | look in Files list and tell me the version numbers
of these files: DIRECTDB.DLL, INETCOMM.DLL, and MSOE.DLL.
2. Open OE File | Identities | Manage Identities: Is there only one (1)
identity listed here and is it called "Main Identity"?
3. Is Automatic Updates enabled?
4. Can you successfully scan and update manually at Windows Update website
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com)?
5. What anti-virus application or security suite is installed? What
anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall
(if any)? Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed?
6. Do you closely adhere to ALL of the following caveats?
- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.
- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.
- Disable Background Compacting [removed in WinXP SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm
- WinXP SP2 only: Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and
do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place.
- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:
<QP>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</QP>

Repost: Please quote my entire post when you reply. I will not answer any
more of your posts unless you do so.
You didn't do #1 properly. I wanted you to look at OE Help | About, not
Windows Help | About. Try again.
What do you mean all of your hotfixes are missing? Is "Show Updates" box
checked in Add/Remove Programs? Have you installed WinXP SP3 since you
first post in this thread?
==============================
The above notwithstanding, Your current Identity may be damaged, especially
if its the default Main Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new
Named Identity (File | Identities | Add new identity). Assuming all is
well, (1) compact all folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from
the old identity into the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File |
Identities | Manage Identities).
To avoid such corruption in future, closely adhere to the caveats I posted
in my previous reply.

Re: .bak files not in Recycle Bin after compact
I opened Outlook Express, clicked Help menu and the clicked About Microsoft
Outlook Express
A window opened up with a list of files with File, Version and Full Path
There is only one Hotfix listed in my Add/Remove Programs from June 7
Show updates is checked
I know there were more Hotfixes listed than that from over the years. Have
had the same SP2 since December 2004
Lots of things seem to be acting up. I can't even post or make a reply in
these groups using IE6. It keeps asking me to sign in or else refreshes the
page
I will try your idea of creating a New Identity in OE
Thanks!

The files I asked about are listed in the File box.

What KB number is that patch (e.g., KB987654)? Is Automatic Update enabled?
(The problem you're having with the web-interface access to this newsgroup
is OT to this thread, at least for now.
