Internet Explorer & WinXP Pro -- semi resolved -- not with chkdsk
Since my last message from Internet Explorer 6 IEAK on 2/10/06, I tried using
a backup file to go back a year to retrieve previous settings. It turned up
crashing my system, but I reinstalled WinXP and got things running again. I
forgot to mention... I still find a problem with a lock trying to use chkdsk
/f. It should go to autochk for my next restart, but when I restart, I get
this message:

Cannot open volume for direct access.

I'm using an NTFS. It attemts to I cannot get this to cancel without going
into registry and removing the autochk in current config under local machine.
I can't defrag anything since this was standing to run--all I get is a
message box that says I must run that first. Just as aditional information, I
have winxp with sp2 all updates. There is something that is causing a dirty
read for my harddrive that I cannot reset--or figure out anyway. I'll go as
deep into changing anything. It's crashed on me twice, before and during
reinstall, so, if there's anything I can do besides clean installing--I'm
willing to go into Admin tools and/or regedit, commandline, etc... Some
things I've researched in help files say that I have a program that I just
installed, and I need to restart the computer. I've done that many times, and
it still doesn't take the lock away. Restarting is not enough. Is there some
database that might have a lock on it that won't release it? It's a fresh
REINSTALL, not new install. I have some of my restored files through backup
on it. If there are any other tools that anyone knows about that can tell me
what's causing this lock and how to unlock it, I'd grately appreciate your
help. I also had one update when I ran ms updates--an update for framework
2.0 that wouldn't install because I believe I needed to uninstall the
previous version before installing the update.

Internet explorer is a cleaner version now since it was reinstalled, but
whatever that lock was, it might be what caused that problem with internet
explorer not closing completely. If you need more information, please post
what you think would be helpful, and I'll retrieve it tonight. Thanks!
