THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
I had posted a problem to the group about newsgroups (not MS groups) not
showing up for some days after my posting and the replies to it. My ISP tech
rep told me it was a 'known problem' in OE5 and that I should upgrade. I had
had the same problem in OE4 and they told me to do the same. In any case,
the posting/replies did show up and I was never satisfied with the tech reps
explanations. I just got the following message from one of them and wanted
to let you know. It seems that the MVP just don't know what they are
doing...english,

>we have advised you to try upgrading your IE/OE, and you refuse, the
only other option i can give you is to try a different newsreader and
see if you get the same results.
there is nothing more that we can offer you for support on this issue.
this has been a known issue with OE for over 5 years.
so if your "expert" doesn't know about it, i would definately not trust
their input.
please try using one of the many different newsreaders that you can
download for free, or one of the shareware readers that has a free
trial.

And I stand by what I first said, if it was a problem with OE, then
there would be a problem with ALL news servers that you subscribe to?
There is no "known problem" using OE as a newsreader. In your case it
would be rather like shooting the mailman because what was contained in
your letter was not what you expected, instead of blaming the sender?

Is your ISP www.gwi.net?
Do they actually carry a news server?
If not, which NNTP service are you using?

Yes, I use gwi.net and the server is news.gwi.net. I still don't know how
they define the OE5 problem and am waiting to hear from them. Thanks.

Just been searching their website, they don't have news servers of their
own, but subscribe to Giganews.
http://www.gwi.net/support/knowledge/newsserver.html

so there may be glitches from Giganews to GWI and back again.

Did you buy your computer or Windows Operating System from your ISP? If
not, why consult the latter about problems concerning the former?

There is no such "known issue", english. Rely on your ISP's Tech Support
for matters involving your connection and service only.

I didn't ask them about problems with my computer or the operating system,
only why messages/replies to newsgroups took so long to show up ON my

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
The point is, they're full of horse hockey. The problem seems to be with
the newsserver (Giganews) that they offer you and since they don't
administer that newsserver they're not qualified to answer questions about
it.

Try using a free news server. The following were listed in the OE6 NG in
response to another query. I don't know if any of them are any good, or
carry the NG's you want.

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
Here's the definitive statement concerning OE5 and newsgroups according to
Lester Palmer, Tech Support at GWI:

"the "known problem" is the problem you are experiencing
and it happens on almost every news server that is not run by Microsoft OE
will not show your posts to the newsgroup until a number of days has past,
if at all"

Now one way to solve this is to see if all OE5 users have this problem or
just GWI OE5 subscribers...I imagine that the newsgroups I use - quite
infrequently - are not very esoteric. Groups that are pretty popular that
have to do with woodworking, home repair, car repair, etc.

Do you have any info on why, even with the 'known problem' in OE5, messages
on Microsoft newsgroups show up so quickly? Are different servers used?

As previously stated - NOT true. I also subscribe to various usenet
groups, and use my ISP's news server - news.freeserve.com
I have no trouble whatsoever subscribing to, sending, receiving to ALL
the NG's that it carries, which is around 30,000 give or take a couple
of thousand.

To prove a point, I just posted to rec.woodworking (I also did a search
for the groups you post to via Google and chose the first one that came
up other than any MS groups.)
I sent the message, did a sync and the message was there less than one
minute after I posted.
From the header.
Date: Sat, 9 Jul 2005 13:40:55 (BST)
Which will be about 5 minutes before I post on here.
Google reference for my post.

From your posts, I would say that only GWI subscribers. NOT OE5
subscribers. I suspect you would have the same problem if you upgraded
to OE6. Please read my post on rec.woodworking and see if their is any
response from posters on there, using OE who are having any trouble.

BINGO! You got it - different servers are used, which is the whole point
of my responses (and PA Bear's) to date.

Same for me. I use freeserve's news server with OE 5.5 and have never
had a problem with my posts not showing up.

Absolutely. IMO it's all to do with how the nntp server is configured.

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
Here's the reply from GWI tech support to your experiment:

Sorry, but MS MVP's are NOT Microsoft certified "technicians" they have been
awarded that title by posting on the MS news servers, they MIGHT be
certified in some area, but just the MS MVP does not prove that

Are you sure that when they are posting to these servers that they are
also using OE 5.5? And are you sure that these servers are not MS based
servers?
I can not connect to the server "news.freeserve.com" so I can not check And
when I do a lookup on the name the DNS reports this

nslookup news.freeserve.com
Server: ns1.gwi
Address: 192.168.2.9

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: news.svr.pol.co.uk
Address: 195.92.193.157
Aliases: news.freeserve.com

That tells me it is a shared server used by many ISP's
And also that it is in the UK

I greatly suspect these people are using OE6.0 and as I have told you
before, it is FIXED in 6.0

And like that news server, we use a service like that; we use giganews
for our newsgroups
This is a world wide news service that MANY ISP's use and they also
have private accounts you can sign up for

Since we have proved to our satisfaction that customers using OE6.0 are not
having this problem, you can either take our advice of either
updating your IE/OE or try a different news reader

We have exhausted all we can do via email, if you have any further
questions regarding this matter please call us (End of reply).

I still don't have a fix for the probleml, although a poster on the
rec.woodworking thread said something about clicking on the header on the
right side??? I'll either have to be patient, get another newsreader (which
might not solve the problem at all) or just get a better ISP.
I thank you and it's been fun...english

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
Kath: I tried the fix suggested in the rec.woodworking thread and it worked.
I posted to that group and received my posting in less than two minutes by
clicking on the icon 'get next headers'.

Does that mean the ISP was somewhat correct and somewhat wrong and we were
too? Is the 'known problem' solved by getting the new posts via the header
icon and not thru the Tools menu? It seems so.

Take care...english

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
In all this time it never occured to me that your settings may be wrong.
Tools>options>read and uncheck "get 300 headers".
Highlight the news server in the folder pane and on the right hand side,
click "settings" then chose "all messages".
Right click your toolbar (where it says New Post, Reply etc) and chose
"customize". In the left hand box scroll till you find Sync All and add
it to the right hand side.
Now when you want to get all the messages in the groups, highlight the
new servers and click Sync All".

Kath

PS. It means your Tech is talking out of his arse, and I'm not even
going to reply to your other post. Once again, there is no "known
problem" with OE5.5

Re: THE TECH REP VS. MS-MVP
Kath: Followed your instructions - unchecked the read option, but I had 50
headers not 300. In any case, if I leave it unchecked I'll get all the
messages waiting in a newsgroup and that could be in the thousands! Left it
at 50 headers, tested the waters again in rec. woodworking and got my post
back immediately by clicking the 'get next headers' icon.

When you wrote: In the left hand box scroll till you find Sync All and add
it to the right hand side. Now when you want to get all the messages in the
groups, highlight the new servers and click Sync All". Won't that download
every message from every group I subscribe to?

I'll let the ISP know that we've discovered the long hidden 'fix' to the
'well known problem' in OE5 and that there is no need to have the OE5 users
upgrade to OE6. However, if they want the solution it will cost them some
bucks. What do you think would be a good price for this service? I can see
at least 3-4 months of free service for me...and for you???

Take care...english

Well, that is how most of us would "start" the subscription off. You
would only have to do it the once, and thereafter when clicking "Sync
All" you would just get all the recent new ones. If on Broadband, it
does not take so long and if on dialup, just go make a cup of tea. I
subscribed to rec.woodworking and got all the messages in a couple of
minutes. There may also not be as many as you think, many news servers
do not keep anything longer than a month or two, some even less. MS
keeps them for around 3 months.

See above.

If you could just get them to acknowledge that there wasn't a "known
problem" with OE5.5 in the first place, that would be a good start!

And you might want to say that despite his following quote -

Sorry, but MS MVP's are NOT Microsoft certified "technicians" they have
been
awarded that title by posting on the MS news servers, they MIGHT be
certified in some area, but just the MS MVP does not prove that.

He is the one that likes to call himself a Tech, whereas I am just your
average housewife, who solved your problem?

while. As for the tech's ego, being a bit of a fighter I won't let him off
the hook so easily...Thanks to you and all for the help. I appreciate it. An
