multiple incoming emails
My friend has called me to say that he is receiving continual copies of the
same email from his cousin.
He gets an error message Ox800CCoF
I cannot best tell him how to resolve the problem; he is not using norton so
it is not that.
Can anyone help?
Thank you

Re: multiple incoming emails
Is your friend getting other messages OK or is it stuck on just
receiving his cousin's message?

If he is receiving other messages OK, then the problem is likely at his
cousin and it is sending the message over and over. Depending on what
program his cousin is using, he needs delete the message from his Outbox
or equivalent. If his cousin is using Outlook Express for sending and
sending a large message, the issue could be that is is being broken up
for sending (Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties, Advanced, Break Apart)
and that option is be turned off.

If your friend is not getting any other messages through, then - he may
have a very large message to download, or one that is causing problems
for your mail program. You may be able to use Telnet to look at your
server mail box and optionally get rid of any problem message. You can
find these Telnet instructions at
http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/pop3telnet.htm
Or your mail service may offer a web interface that would allow you to
delete the problem message. If not, you might be able to use
http://mail2web.com or http://www.mailstart.com for this function (if
your ISP allows outside access to their POP3 mail server). In the case
of his cousin having sent a bunch of messages, he may be able to use the
web interface to delete those messages on the server.

- The POP3UIDL.DAT (IMN or OE4) or POP3UIDL.DBX (OE5+) file may be
corrupted. This is used to track previously downloaded messages when
you leave messages on a POP3 server (Tools, Accounts, Mail, Properties,
Advanced). However, the file gets updated even if you aren't leaving
messages on the server. Delete the file with Outlook Express or
Internet Mail closed. (On Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden
or System files in the folder options and XP you need to use the
advanced options to find Hidden or System files.) The next time all
mail on the server will be downloaded. But after that the file should
function correctly again.

- The POP3 mail server is having problems.

- Anti-virus program scanning e-mail as it downloads or anti-spam
program. Increasing the Server Timeout at Tools, Accounts, Mail,
Properties, Advanced might help. Or you may need to disable the
anti-virus or anti-spam software from scanning e-mail.

- Outlook Express 5 Downloads Same E-Mail Message Multiple Times
  http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=245620
OE 5.00 has problems with leaving mail on the server when you have
multiple POP3 accounts on the same mail server. (This may be fixed in
5.01 and later.) If you use the IP address for the POP3 mail server
name in the second account, that seems to be a workaround. If you have
more than 2 POP3 accounts on a server, you can use the C:\Windows\HOSTS
file to make up alias names for the POP3 mail server that point to the
appropriate IP address.

Re: multiple incoming emails
Thank you; one of the first things I asked him was did he have Norton or any
other new protective software nstalled, he said no so I tried to think of
something else.
After much further questioning I found that in downloading a tune from I
Tunes a virus checker (Ithink as I have not seen his computer for a while)
had been installed, he thinks it was called something like uvg - not AVG.
I told him to remove this and after doing so his computer started working
normally.
Thanks again.
