Configuration problem
My computer had to be reformatted due to a number of problems. I have XP and
IE6.

Something is wrong in my configurations of OE and Newsgroups. I just tried
whatever I knew, but it is not working. This is the only newsgroup that I
managed to get downloaded. On any others that I try to look up, it says "the
server could not be found."

On Hotmail I cannot download any messages into my Inbox. And all the folders
that I previously had do not appear.

I am not that good in computers, so I would appreciate if someone could
kindly walk me thru with the configurations steps.
Thanks

Re: Configuration problem
It's common for people to confuse News Servers and newsgroups.

In Tools, Accounts, News, Properties, Server, you put in the name of a
news Server. This news server is msnews.microsoft.com. Your ISP may
have a news server. It's name could be something like news.yourisp.com.
News server names typically end in .com or .net.

Each news server carries a number of newsgroups. Could be dozens,
hundreds or thousands. This newsgroup is called
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress
Once you connect to a news server, you can subscribe to a newsgroup via
Tools, Newsgroups.

If you put the newsgroup name in the account setup, you will get the not
found error.

With Hotmail you have to successfully connect to the Hotmail server.
Once you do that, OE will copy the existing Hotmail messages and folders
to your PC.

Since you are using OE6, the appropriate newsgroup for further help
would be:
Use the following newsgroup for questions or problems with OE6
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

You can also get to the Outlook Express newsgroups via this web site:

There select Internet Explorer, then Outlook Express.

Re: Configuration problem
Thanks for your response. I've got most of the problems sorted out, but
these two problems remain:

1. Whenever I log in, OE asks for the password. How can I get rid of that?

2. I've got all the msgs downloaded at the Inbox, but the around 10 Local
Folders that I had previously do not appear. How can I get my Folders back?
Thanks

Go to Tools | Accounts and select the account. Click Properties | Servers,
enter your account name and password and check the box to remember it.

1) See Frank's response

2) Did you backup your OE folders before the reformat? Local folders
were stored only on your hard disk. If you didn't back them up, they
are lost.

Re: Configuration problem
Come to think of it, I had backed them up on a thumb drive. The guy who
reformatted my computer simply placed the OE Folder from my thumb drive on
my desktop where it still is. He said that would do it, but obviously it is
not, and he is gone and so is the money.

As I am not that good in computers, I would appreciate if you could kindly
guide me on where do I place this folder (do I drag or copy) from my
desktop and how .

Re: Configuration problem
The references that I gave you before tell how to do that.

You can't just copy them to the OE folder. That won't work.

Most often you just need to open OE and do a File, Import and tell OE to
import the messages from an OE6 Store Directory.

That won't work if folders.dbx file is missing. In that case you need
to use the procedure to import a single DBX which will be tedious if you
have a lot of them.

Re: Configuration problem
1) Open Outlook Express

2) Select: FILE, IMPORT, MESSAGE..., Microsoft Outlook Express 6

3) on the next screen select Import from an OE6 Message Store Directory
and when prompted select the location of the OE folder that has the DBX
files that came from the thumb drive.

Re: Configuration problem
Please tell me the easiest thing to do even if it is tedious. My Inbox
folder is getting too bloated and I cannot place any on the messages there
into the folders that are not there at this time. I have to do something
quick.
Thanks

Re: Configuration problem
Managed to get all my folders onto OE. Thanks so much.

One problem though. The folders show messages stored only till March 07. I
seem to have lost the rest till Sep 07. I had the main OE folder "send to"
my desktop and did the backup from the desktop to save the tedium of going
to look for the folder each time I did the backup.

I had done the backup on Sep 15 but somehow I did not get all in. Looks like
the folder on my desktop did not get it all in. I may not have done the
proper procedure of sending the OE folder onto my desktop. How should I do
it so I can always backup the folder from the desktop?
Thanks

Re: Configuration problem
OE stores all the folders (DBX files) in a single Windows folder.
Unless you moved the whole store folder there which requires a special
procedure, it sounds like you made a copy of the folders back in March
and kept backing up the March copy and not the active folders. In that
case, you lost everything since March.

Backing Up, Recovering and Restoring Outlook Express versions 5 & 6
Files and Settings
http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/index.htm

If you want to move the active store folder to the desktop, then see:
How do I move my store folder?
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#movestore
I wouldn't make the desktop the store folder, but create a folder on the
desktop to be the store folder. Or you could create a shortcut on the
desk top that points to the current store folder.

Re: Configuration problem
Make sure that you are backing up the current DBX and related files. If
you look at the Modified Date for the files, they should be recent (e.g.
the last time you added message to the folder or did a Compact).

The link in my previous replies cover what to backup.

Re: Configuration problem
Sorry for the delay. Went sick for a couple of days. Tried the backup, but
not getting it. As I've explained to you, I am not that good in computers
and it is difficult for me to understand things that you would easily
understand. Would most appreciate if you could detail the steps for me to
carry out. I am unable to find the OE folder that I have to backup, and what
I need to do after that.
Thanks
