Outlook Express 5.5 Update
Is this the right group for this question?

I am running OE5.5 (5.50.4897.1700) )on Win98SE.

I downloaded the following file:
oe5.5sp2-KB897715-Windows2000-x86-ENU.exe
from
<URL: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx>

Is it intended for Win98SE as it says Windows2000?

Thanks in advance.

Well, I tried it an got two errors dialogs:

D:\ ... \oe5.5sp3-kb897715-Windows2000-x86-ENU.exe

A device attached to the system is not functioning.

and

Error Starting Program

The OE5.5SP3-KB897715-WINDOWS2000-X86-ENU.EXE file is
linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem.

Is there a version for Win98SE? Thanks.

Thanks for your response.

Yes and it doesn't offer any thing for Outlook Express (OE).

If I click on "Office Update" I see stuff for Outlook not OE.

If you are offered nothing, then you are unlikely to need anything?

Get the office updates. Set OE as the default mail client again afterwards
:-))

Regarding the file that you D/L - delete it !!

NO! (If a fan belt says "Ford LTD 1995", is it intended for a 2005 Honda?)

Rely on Windows Update for updates/patches your machine needs. (In fact,
you should be running IE6 SP1, fully updated, now: MS considers it a
critical update.)

Though a radio antenna intended for a Chevette is the same as that of a
Corvette's but a lot cheaper... Anyway, Win98SE is mentioned in the
list of "Affected Software" for the patch:

Windows Update doesn't identify any updates for OE5.5.

I'm not clear what your <QP> means; here's how I read it:

    Affected Software:
     Outlook Express 5.5,
     Outlook Express 6.0,
     Outlook Express 6
    on
     Windows Server 2003,
     Windows 2000 Advanced Server,
     Windows 2000 Datacenter Server,
     Windows 2000 Professional,
     Windows 2000 Server,
     Windows XP Home Edition,
     Windows XP Professional,
     Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition,
     Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition,
     Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition,
     Windows Server 2003, Web Edition,
     Windows 98,
     Windows 98 SE,
     Windows Me,
     Internet Explorer 5.5,
     Internet Explorer 6.0

Or, to strip it down for my purposes:

    Affected Software:
     Outlook Express 5.5,
    on
     Windows 98 SE,

Drivel removed.

McKirahan,

You only need that update if you are on an affected operating
system!!!!!!!!! eg: see below, Outlook Express 5.5 Service Pack 2 on
Microsoft Windows 2000, you are on W98!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sheesh.

From the KB article
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-030
Vulnerability in Outlook Express Could Allow Remote Code Execution (897715)
Affected Components:

Outlook Express 5.5 Service Pack 2 on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service
Pack 3 and on Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4:

Get IE6 and stop pi**ing into the wind!!

Happy new Year.

Re: Outlook Express 5.5 Update
<QP> = <Quote/Paste>

Put your thinking cap on: Yes, Win9x and OE5.5 are Affected Components but
in Win9x, the only version of OE subject to the vulnerablility addressed by
897715 is OE6 SP1.

Again, rely on Windows Update for patches your machine needs instead of
picking & choosing ones you think it might need. That's what's it there
for!

There you go! If you're running OE5.5 in Win98, you don't need any updates,
therefore you shouldn't try to install 897715 (especially 897715 for Win2K).

You /should/ be running OE & IE 6 SP1 for maximum security and I'm sure
Windows Update is offering it to you as it's a Critical Update for Win98.
