Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it was
On a machine running Win XP and Outlook Express 6 (updated) the mail remains
"stuck" in the "outbox" folder even after it was sent.
The file is not moved to the "sent items" folder. Thus, the same mail is
repeatedly sent again and again.
I updated the program through the Microsoft Download page but with no avail.
Please advice.

Sent Items is probably corrupt.
Move any messages you want to keep out of Sent Items.
Go to Tools | Options | Maintenance and see where OE is storing its files.
Close OE.
Go there with Windows Explorer and move Sent Items.dbx to an empty Windows
folder. With Win2K and WinXP it will be a hidden file.

You can use One or these tools to extract the messages from the old DBX
file:

DBXtract ($5): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/
DBXpress: ($25 but worth it)
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

The messages can be dragged from a Windows folder back into an OE folder in
OE's Folder List.

In the future do not use the default folders to store messages. Move them
to user created folders.

Re: Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it
Thanks for your prompt responce!

Yet, I can not find the dbx file location. Under tools there is only
"internet options" and no "maintenance" tab there.

Further more, now I noticed that only mail with attached files are the ones
that cause problems. Regular mail (with no attachments) is sent and moved to
the sent item folder as it should.

Thanks

Re: Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it
Hi there,

You can find the location of the DBX files by right-clicking on the folder
in the Folder List, and choosing Properties.

In addition to your Sent Items being corrupt, your Outbox is probably also
corrupt. Close OE, find outbox.dbx and delete it; OE will build you a new
one the next time you open it.

Re: Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it
Outlook Express Tools > Options, not Internet Explorer Tools >...

In WindowsXP, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as
hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files
and Folders under Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View.

Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It provides no
additional protection and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

<paste>
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.
</paste>
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in WinXP SP2 and Win2K03] and
frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working
offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 & Win2K03 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

Re: Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it
When I deleted the outbox, it did nothing - when I deleted the sent folder,
it seemed to fix all, until a few days later, the problem has resumed. Any
other ideas?

Re: Outlook Express -mail remains in the "outbox" folder after it
If deleting the Sent Items.dbx file fixed the problem, then that file
was likely corrupted.

If the problem returned, that suggests that the file got corrupted
again.

Several things can cause the corruption.
 - The file getting too large, but that wouldn't likely happen in a few
days unless you send messages with huge attachments.
 - Having a power outage while OE is running or turning off the PC
without properly shutting down OE first
 - Having Background Compaction enabled in older versions of OE (Tools,
Options, Maintenance). Never versions have removed that option because
of the problems that it caused
 - You anti-virus scanning e-mail

As long as your anti-virus software is set to scan files as they are
opened, scanning e-mail as it downloads or sends is unnecessary and
prone to problems. With some anti-virus (and anti-spam) programs,
simply disabling the e-mail scanning function doesn't really disable it.
It simply tells the program not to flag any messages. It still
processes all the messages and may still cause send/receive failures.
What you may need to do is uninstall the anti-virus program, then
reinstall it using a custom install option and unselect the e-mail
scanning component for installation.
