IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.google.
Everytime I go to maps.google.com, my browser crashes and closes with the
following error signature:
AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 5.51.4807.2300 ModName: jscript.dll
ModVer: 5.5.0.8513 Offset: 000087e4
This problem never ever happens at any other websites. I have 256mb ram.
Don't have anything else to offer. Can you suggest anything I can check?
(versions of shockwave, directX etc)? Thanks for any help.

First eliminate any spyware.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Hi Frank,
Thanks for the quick response. Tried all your suggestions and still the
same. Running fix programs indicated no changes needed. Must mention that I
never have problems connecting to the internet nor going to any web pages at
all except maps.google.com which makes me think it's related to that specific
site as I have NO problems any other times. Any other advice? Thanks again.

Check for a file named HOSTS with no extension (not Hosts.sam). It may be a
hidden file. Open it with Notepad and remove any line referencing the site.
Or, rename HOSTS to OLDHOSTS

Click "Start", "Run", type or paste
"RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV,IE5Maintenance" into the "Open" box and click
"OK". Then select "Repair Internet Explorer" and click "OK".

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Hi folks, no success yet. There is no file HOSTS with no extension anywhere
on my computer only hosts.sam. Even checked the hidden files. Also ran
RUNDLL32 SETUPWBV,IE5Maintenance as suggested but to no avail. Still need
help. Please stay with me on this one. I appreciate it.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
The procedure I suggested should have brought up a dialog box with an option
to repair Internet Explorer. If this happened and the repair was unsuccessful,
go to
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=308260#XSLTH3132121123120121120120
and update the scripting engine for Internet Explorer.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Ben.
Thanks for staying with me on this tough one. I did run the IE repair kit
but evidentally it did not work. Didn't get any errors though. Updated the
script engine as you suggested by your document below and also installed the
latest DirectX9.0c. Also checked each of the troubleshooting tips mentioned
on the page but also to no avail... and as stated before, the problem exixsts
only for maps.google.com on my machine (any user) only. This site works
beautifully on my PC at work. What else could be wrong with my PC. What's
left to try? As before, thanks very much.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Find the "c:\windows\system\jscript.dll" file, right-click it, select "Properties",
"Version" and make sure the version is at least "5.6.0.8825". If so, click
"Start", "Run", type "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\jscript.dll" and click "OK".
You may have to close and restart Internet Explorer for the change to take
effect. Also, searching "C:\Windows\Fix IE Log.txt" for "jscript.dll" might
be useful.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Uh-oh - Found jscript.dll in c:\windows\system to be version 5.6.0.8825.
However, the file C:\Windows\Fix IE Log.txt had the following enrtry with a
different version as follows: Is this significant? Verifying
JSCRIPT.DLL=5.5.0.4801-
                                                 File JSCRIPT.DLL version
checked.
Also, running "regsvr32 c:\windows\system\jscript.dll" succeeded. Restarted
IE but no dice yet. I'm starting to worry now. Help.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Try Windows Update.
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
Click "Scan for updates" to see if any updates are available. Please
note that if you download Internet Explorer version 6, your browser
will be upgraded, which may or may not help. You also might try
a virus scan.

AVG http://www.grisoft.com
F-PROT http://www.f-prot.com

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
This is getting frustrating! I Installed all my updates except upgrading to
IE6.0 Sp1. What are the chances of a fix if I do the full install of IE5.5
Sp2. Shouldn't this overwrite all currently existing files with good ones?
Are there any other newsgroups that specialize in IE?

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
news:microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

I don't know if a reinstall will correct the problem.
You might try searching the hard drive for duplicate copies
of "jscript.dll", since the version mentioned in the error
message was different from the one in the Windows\System
folder.

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Joe,

Have you tried disabling *all* other software (excluding firewall) to ensure
that it is not interfering and triggering the crash?

Re: IE 5.5 closes unexpectedly when opening connecting to maps.goo
Could be your jscript.dll is damaged/corrupted. Let's force a replacement
of that file. Download the appropriate scripting engine file for your OS
here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/list/webdev.asp - one of the
first two links on the right there.

Do a Find for that file and rename it with an .old extension. If you cannot
do this, restart in Safe Mode.
Then install the scripting engines from your download.

Hopefully this will fix that file and any version mis-matches you may have.

If no joy:
