shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm error
Running WINME on a 900mhz Dell. Can't access web pages with IE, says page not
found then at bottom of IE screen get:
res://c:windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

System has Fix-IT running on it but I ran Stinger a found a couple of
viruses then downloaded and ran new version of Ad-Aware but had to use
definition file from a CD because Ad-Aware can't update on this machine.
Cleaned out Temp directoty, recycle bin, Temporary Internet files, history,
etc. Ran Hijackthis and didn't find any problems with that.

Basically connection to ISP goes O.K. then IE says it is opening web page
(for example www.yahoo.com) At this point IE progress bar starts and moves
some then restarts a couple of times before producing Cannot Find Server and
Cannot Open Page error messages. Then at bottom of IE screen get:
res://c:windows\system\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm

System has been running O.K. for several months then this problem started
about 2 weeks ago.

Any help would be appreciated.

First eliminate any spyware.
What You Should Know About Spyware
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/devioussoftware.mspx

CAUTION!!!!! Removing some spyware can damage the Winsock stack and you may
not be able to connect to the Internet. Before you try to remove spyware,
download a copy of LSP-Fix - a free program to repair damaged Winsock 2
stacks AFTER you remove the software (all Windows versions)

Winsockfix for W95, W98, ME, NT, 2000, XP

In WinXP SP2: You can fix Winsock by going to Start | Run and typing
CMD
In the command window type
netsh winsock reset

Thanks for your response. But I had already read this answer that you posted
to someone else. I have run the anti-spyware tools and didn't help. have
already run LPs-Fix and have ran Hijackthis and turned in logs to security
forums(such as castle Cops) which said the log was clean. Not running XP so
that part doesn't help.

Anthing else to try than the above?

Re: shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm error
Hi,
What type of internet connection- dial-up, cable, dsl?

Have you tried disabling any third-party security/privacy programs which
might be causing this?

Try deleting the History folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder. See
the instructions at http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm Delete the
*folders* don't just delete the files.

I would try to fix this problem first, but you should, for security reasons,
upgrade to IE6.

What's link to the HijackThis log?

Re: shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm error
Frank,

Solved the problem. Registry entries for Dial-Up Networking got corrupted
(don't know how) and after rebuilding those files IE resumed working correctly
