Win2K Pro - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error with external drive
I have Win2K Pro on a Dell Latitude D400 and get a
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED error when I try plugging in the external USB
DVD/CD-ROM drive (D/Bay) that came with the PC. I also tried plugging in an
old iomega ZIP CD-ROM drive and got the same error.

The problem seems to be with the USB Mass Storage device driver
(usbstor.sys) and I think it may have to do with some compatibility issues
between USB 1.0 and 2.0. I do have a Seagate USB external HD attached that
does work and uses USB 2.0.

Any suggestions on how to get my external CD-ROM drives working and resolve
this USB driver issue? I'd like to upgrade to WinXP but I don't have a
CD-ROM drive that I can use.

Do I need to get a new usbstor.sys driver? If so, how? I did uninstall the
Seagate driver but I still got the error when plugging in the other USB 1.0
drives so I think it must be looking at a corrupt usbstor.sys driver or some
other driver.

Any help in diagnosing is much appreciated.

RE: Win2K Pro - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error with external drive
Just to add on to this. I think I confirmed that it is a USB 1.0 / 2.0
conflict. In Device Manager, I noticed a USB 2.0 Root Hub. I disabled that
and now I can plug the other USB 1.0 devices in but they are not recognized
in Device Manager. Any suggestions on how to set it up so that when I plug
in a USB 1.0 device, it looks at the right USB Root Hub and the same for when
I plug in the USB 2.0 External HD?

My first course of action would be to make sure the OS is as up-to-date as
it can be...if you're not on SP4 yet, that's the first thing to do (that
would get you the latest version of USBSTOR.SYS). i.e., go to
update.microsoft.com. If you're already on SP4, or that doesn't work, then
I'd see if (A) there are vendor drivers (either from Dell or D/Bay and
Iomega), or (B) newer drivers available from Microsoft (again,
update.microsoft.com).

Good luck,
Ernest

Re: Win2K Pro - KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error with external dr
Thanks. I am on SP4 and I have tried getting updated drivers. I think what
has happened is that for some reason when I plugged in my USB 2.0 external
HD, it has taken over the USB ports completely but it doesn't allow a USB 1.0
device to be recognized. In Device Manager, I have the following USB
controllers:

Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C2
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C4
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller - 24C7
USB 2.0 Root Hub

When all of these are enabled, I can plug in my USB mouse and the USB 2.0
External HD (Seagate) but cannot plug in the external CD-ROM drives.

If I disable the USB 2.0 Root Hub and leave the other 3 enabled, the USB 2.0
External HD is not recognized and the external CD-ROM drives still cause the
KMODE error.

If I disable the top 3 controllers and leave the USB 2.0 Root Hub enabled,
my USB 2.0 External HD works but my USB mouse does not and the external
CD-ROM drives are not recognized.

The only thing I can guess is that when I installed my USB 2.0 External HD,
it somehow messed up the existing mapping of the USB 1.0 devices to the right
drivers. Not sure if this makes sense.

If anyone can make any suggestions, that would be great.

What I would love to do is disable or uninstall the USB 2.0 Root Hub and
drivers and get it so the top 3 USB controllers above are working which I
think are linked to my old USB 1.0 external CD-ROM devices.

Am I making sense?
