File Ownership Problem/Question

File Ownership Problem/Question

We have a server with a share that is used by students.  The rights on this 
share are such that the students only have right to their own files 
(creator/owner), and the teachers have modify rights to the folder.

When a student creates a file, they are the owner.  At this point they can 
reopen the file, make changes, re-save.  However, if the teacher opens the 
file, makes changes, and saves it, the teacher becomes owner of the file, 
and the student can no longer open the file.

It appears that if I, as a Domain Admin open up the students work, make 
changes and save it, the ownership does not change.  I tried giving the 
teachers Full Control (which is what Domain Admins has) to see if that would 
change the behavior, but it did not.

Here are the rights that the Creator/Owner have in this folder:

List Folder/Read Data
Read Extended Attributes
Create Files/Append Data
Create Folders/Append Data
Write Attributes
Write Extended Attributes
Delete

Here are the rights that the teachers have in this folder:

Traverse Folder/Execute File
List Folder/Read Data
Read Attributes
Read Extended Attributes
Create Files/Append Data
Create Folders/Append Data
Write Attributes
Write Extended Attributes
Delete
Read Permissions

These permissions are working for keeping the students out of each others 
work.  However, the teachers would like to be able to save their changes 
back to the students.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If the students work is a Microsoft Office Document, making changes is really
deleting and adding the file, resulting in an ownership change.

If you opened a different type of file, then ownership wouldn't change.

It was in Word.  However, when I did it as Domain Admin, it still allowed 
the student to re-open the document after I saved it.
