Windows 2000 Pro Installer not working all the time.
Greetings,

I am trying to install some software and upgrade drivers on my desktop. The driver is for my 3D Space Mouse. (CAD)

The driver returned an error message, 'Error: -1601 The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed.' I went to the web-site, 'Install Shield Consumer Center' and read-up.

That didn't help.

I double click the applacation that I want to install, and "Windows Installer" stops/fails. Quietly.

I have gone to Microsoft's web-site for, 'Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility' and that has not helped.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898628

I have also gone to; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/898628 This has not helped either.

I have even put the Windows 2000 Pro CD in, in hopes of it trying to fix/repair. Nothing has worked.

In the mean time, I have installed "Skype". Go figure.

I have a laptop with XP. The software and drivers upgrade/installed quit well.

I can only assume that my desktop Installer is corrupt. But how to fix?
