Changing text color in an XP directory
Can this be done for quick ID purposes?

....or do I need a software program for this task?

If you right-click the folder, click Properties, click the Customize
tab, you can place a photo that resides in the folder on the folder
icon. That's about all you can do without special software.

Search for "Color Folders"
