using Disk Cleanup on sp2
Hi all. I accidentally check the compress old files in windows native Disk
Cleanup software. Now I have a 20% reduction in my system's performance. Is
there anyway to uncompress my system32 files & gain back my system's
performance without having to format my entire hard drive? Because that is
what the IT guy at my job recommended. Some of the system files in use will
not accept any uncompression commands from the "Run" window prompt. spent a
week trying to undo this. GUYS I NEED HELP!!!!!!!

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
Have you done a defrag? What virus programs are you running? What is
indicated in task manager?

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
Yes I have done a defrag using O & O. I use kaspersky anti virus &
Faronics deep freeze. My computer is mostly virus & spyware free & has been
for the last 4 years now. I am tempted to install sp3 but the IT guy at my
job says it causes a lot of problems so I have avoided that option but
eventually may have to use it. Does sp3 replace all the current system32 file
with new ones? Recovery console does not accept my Admin password for some
reason so I used Bart PE. I tried bart pe on boot to uncompress the system32
files but I could not access my hard drive correctly as they had 0kb values.
Bart Pe does not recognize xp sp2 CD downloaded from Microsoft website. My
Primary IDE channels current transfer mode is PIO Mode. Transfer mode is DMA
if available. Device type grayed in at auto detection. My secondary IDE
Channel current transfer mode "Ultra DMA Mode 2. Transfer Mode "DMA if
available. Device type grayed in at auto detection. I managed to uncompress
the majority of my files from safe mode via compact /u /i /a /s:\ command.
How could something so simply cause me so much trouble all I want is to
uncompress my system32 files in use which I feel is causing me the problem
but I could be wrong. Before any of this happened my computer had a tendency
of restart itself for no reason. So I ran system disk check, defragged my
computer using the default defragger & O & O, ran CC cleaner, ran disk clean
up & accidentally had compress old files, disk chk 2 more times. I got rid of
my computer restating itself problem but now took a 20% hit on my systems
performance after I ran the disk cleanup utility. I thought it would make
performance better but made it worse. please help!

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
If you want someone to analyze your HijackThis log, you might want to post it on
one of the following forums.

These forums are staffed by volunteers who have demonstrated
their ability to interpret these logs and provide safe and
helpful assistance. Also, the forums are moderated, adding a
degree of assurance that the advice given is valid. Please, do
not post a HijackThis log on one of these newsgroups. You have
no guarantee that the advice given would not make a bad
situation worse.

Getting back to your problem, I'm no hardware expert but I think you'll find
that some of your performance issues are wrapped up in this statement from your
post, "Primary IDE channels current transfer mode is PIO Mode." Take a look at
the For repeated DMA errors section of this article for more info.

DMA Mode for ATA/ATAPI Devices in Windows XP
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

Adding to that your comment about the computer restarting leads me to believe
that you may have an issue with a hardware device or devices.

Good luck

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
I manually compress files by right clicking on the containing folder in
Windows Explorer and selecting Properties, Advanced. and check the box
before "Compress contents to save Disk space" , then clicking on Apply
and OK. It is really only worth the effort with Archives, Windows Update
Uninstall folders and System Restore points if you hold a lot. Files /
folders need to be large, rarely accessed and capable of significant
compression.

You do the reverse to decompress. i.e. uncheck the box before "Compress
contents to save Disk space" , click on Apply and OK. Do folders one
at a time as if you decompressed your Windows folder it would take a
long time and leave you wondering whether it was working. Please note
that compressed files are displayed in Windows Explorer in a blue font
and uncompressed file in a grey / black font.

You only need to decompress files regularly accessed.

Hope this helps.

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
"Ultra DMA Mode 2" is not very good.

Try HD Tune only gives information and does not fix any
problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

Hope this helps.

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
Thank you for the help. I really appreciate it. I think that advice is
somewhere along the lines of what my IT guy told me. But when I check under
device manager it says that the hard drive device is functioning properly &
also I am not having the restart problems anymore so it's confusing. Do you
know if sp3 replaces system32 files? Where can I download the original driver
for the primary IDE Channel? Does upgrading to sp3 automatically fix this
problem? thanks a bunch! <3

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
I doubt that installing SP3 is going to help with your performance issue.

As for Device Manager saying that the device is working properly, that's true
but it's not working as efficiently as it should. PIO mode is a slower transfer
method than DMA.

If, when you open the Properties sheet for your primary IDE channel, the
settings are similar to what's displayed in this image then you're not getting
the performance from your hard drive that you should.

PIO mode
http://www.dansdata.com/images/io066/piomode.gif

To correct the problem you need to uninstall the primary IDE channel driver,
restart your computer, and let Windows reinstall the driver. Take a look at this
article for a pretty good explanation of the procedure.

How to check your DMA status & reset it if necessary
http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=61905

Keep in mind that before taking any steps to deal with this issue you should
have any important files backed up.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to post a question about the PIO mode issue to the
Windows XP Hardware and/or General newsgroups. You might find someone with more
experience dealing with this type of problem that has a different approach than
the one I've suggested.

Good luck

Re: using Disk Cleanup on sp2
You should not update a system that is not functioning properly. It is a
recipe for disaster.
