Installing Java RTE
I'm having a series of serious problems in Windows, the latest being unable
to install the Java browser plugin.

A month ago, I had a very clean new installation of WinXP Pro on a rebuilt
PC, but I accidentally trashed it by installing an old Win95 version of
Visio. Due to frequent crashes, I completely reinstalled Windows
XP--intending to start fresh by Fdisking the drive. However, I somehow only
installed Windows over the top of the previous installation. The result is
that that the Program Files structure had files left over from the corrupted
installation.

Now, when I try to install Java plugin I get an error message indicating
that it can't install because Java is already running. In fact, the Control
Panel shows nothing for Java. Java is not running, but the application files
are there under Program Files, and the Registry has entries for Java.

What's the best way to recover from this problem? Can I manually deletethe
old files and Registry entry?

I've run the Live OneCare Scanner. It found 288 bad entries in the Registry
but was unable to fix the Java problem.

RE: Installing Java RTE
It's very rare for modern websites to require Java. If by chance you do need
to access a Java website, then be aware that having it installed as a browser
plugin does somewhat increase the risk of being hacked. My policy is not to
install it unless actually needed, and to turn off the browser plugin when
not actually being used.

-in most cases a full removal will clear whatever is preventing the install.

To remove the MS JVM,
http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4158

To remove the Sun JRE, uninstall ALL instances of Java in add/remove
programs. There may be several, and these are NOT references to the same JRE
but to multiple instances. Then check that the subfolder under Program Files
has been removed, plus
c:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Sun\

Now try installing again.
