Following what I think was a virus attack (something with "Zlob" in its name) I have lost the use of crucial utilities - can't access them. System Restore in non-functional; Windows Explorer only displays 'My Documents' - no access to C drive generally; numerous icons were wiped from the pulpit; I get error messages from Internet Explorer at 30 second intervals, etc., etc. 'Last Known Good Config' doesn't get me anywhere and attempts to reload XP from the CD fail. Where can I get help? Thanks for charitable replies.
At this stage of the game it is best to format the drive and reinstall everything. Hopefully you have backed up you work faithfully When your system starts enter the BIOS normally by pressing the Delete key and set the CD as the 1st boot device...then insert the XP CD and reboot. Watch for the message "press any key to boot off CD".....press any key and it should boot off the CD at which point you should do a new installation. Watch for the option to format the HD before the install and pick the option to format. The above works on most systems.. exceptions being machines from Dell/HP/??? with preinstalled versions of XP and only "recovery" CD's or partition on the HD,in which case you will need to read the manual that came with the system. peter -- DISCLAIMER: If you find a posting or message from me offensive, inappropriate, or disruptive, please ignore it. Zlob and its partners-in-crime are insidious. You have two choices: 1- Show the computer to a professional geek service. 2- Wipe your hard drive and reinstall everything. (That's what the geek service may do anyway.) --- Leonard Grey Errare humanum est Misterfyer wrote: > Following what I think was a virus attack (something with "Zlob" in its name) > I have lost the use of crucial utilities - can't access them.
