Can't run Adobe Shockwave Player
I have recently downloaded some videos with a .FLV extension, calling for
Adobe Shockwave Player. But when I try to run them, Windows XP Home can't
locate the appropriate program.

But I HAVE installed it. The installer claimed it was done

And when I click Settings | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs, Adobe
Shockwave appears (although curiously with no size data).

And when in IE7 I click Tools | Folder Options, and attempt to create an
association with .FLV and Adobe Shockwave Player, the program doesn't show
up in the list.

Finally, per the Adobe website, the program should be installed into a
folder Windows | System32 | Adobe. But that folder doesn't show up in
Windows Explorer.

So what's going on? Where is the program hiding, and more to the point, how
do I get it to play the .FLV files

Run the Flash uninstaller that you get from the above Adobe link.

Then install flash directly from Adobe; link below.
Untick the Google toolbar download part of it.

Re: Can't run Adobe Shockwave Player
in addition to
mikes suggestion,

you can see the flash
browser helper objects
and delete them with
a freeware at microsoft.com
called autoruns.

Re: Can't run Adobe Shockwave Player
I followed the suggested steps. Uninstaller says it worked. The installer
gave me a few prompts, which i followed. The installer then told me the
program was successfully installed.

But when I tried to run an FLV file - nothing doing. The program doesn't
appear in Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs. There's no Adobe folder in
Windows | System32

I'm set to accept cookies from Adobe. So now what's left?

Media Player Classic is a better player, and it's far more versatile.
Download and install K-Lite Codec Pack Standard (which includes MPC):

Re: Can't run Adobe Shockwave Player
You can also download and use a freebie or shareware FLV player for just
playing a downloaded FLV file. A Google search can find some.
