Hard disc activity before logon   

Running XP pro SP3 and I have vigorous hard disc activity for many minutes 
before I logon.   How can I check what application/process is doing this?

I use Kaspersky AV and Diskeeper defrag but they are not set to run at boot 
time.  Could it be Windows defrag running?
