We are running MCMS 2002, sp2, asp.net 2.0 with Visual Studio 2005.
When we create the web in VS2005, we select "File-New Web site" and
select "MCMS Web application". When I build however, no dll is
created on my file system.
Is there something I am missing here? has anyone else experienced
this?

Yes, we are using code behind files. In addition, I am using class
files in my app_code directory for customizations.

I found the answer. In order to create a dll I need to choose "Build-
Publish Web site". This will create (in the location I specify) a
file structure, including any file assets required for deployment, as
well as any dll's required.
