Incorrect path in browser, but only over the Internet
I have successfully installed Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 on a single
server setup.
I have created a site called ‘Projects’ under the default site ‘Site’ and I
have created two sites under this, to hold two different projects.

On the internal network I can get to both of the sites under ‘Projects’
without a problem. The URL in the browser displays correctly and if I check
the site settings, it shows the paths correctly e.g.

http://portal.mysite.com/sites/projects/sap and
http://portal.mysite.com/sites/projects/crm

From the Internet, everything displays ok up to projects e.g.
http://portal.mysite.com/sites/projects/ , but as soon as I click the link
to go to one of the sub-sites, the browser displays the internal Sharepoint
server IP address e.g. http://192.168.0.55/sites/projects/crm and can’t find
the page.

I assume that somewhere in my setup I need to set a default path all sites
to use. Could somebody please advise me what to do?

Thanks in advance for any help

Re: Incorrect path in browser, but only over the Internet
Ian,

Did you configure the alternate portal site URLs for intranet and
extranet? If not that may be the problem. Under SharePoint Portal Server
Central Administration -> Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration ->
Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet and custom
access. There you can define how SharePoint formats the URLs it returns to
browsers based on what you base URL is. For example you might use
http://portal.mycompany.com for external (extranet) access and
http://intranet.mycompany.com for internal access. Based on the setting you
define and the base requested URL SharePoint will alter the URL composition
to ensure you get the correct URL depending you where you are accessing
SharePoint from. MS doesn't recommend using the same URL path for both
internal and external access, probably for this reason. An alternate way to
get around this would be to use URL substitution on your firewall/Proxy
server (like ISA 2004) but again it's not a best practice and depending on
the complexity of the URLs it may or may not always work correctly.
