OUTLOOK EXPRESS DELETED ALL INBOX EMAILS when compacting
Funny thing happened.
OE automatically DELETED 3 years worth of WANTED inbox messages....
when it automatically started compacting. Removed every INBOX email from
7/2003 until 11/26/2005!

can't figure out how to restore.

SEE 1 million KB huge DBX files from 7/26 and 7/2004 via search, but unsure
of how to import or restore them.

Was able to restore files through 4/2005 by running a OE Backup archive (3rd
party software) on machine...

WANT TO KNOW:

1. what happened. No it was not compacting in background. I don't usually
let it compact, but since I was going to bed, I figured it ok.
Didn't know it would 100% DELETE not archive them...
OR where did it HIDE THEM?

2. why
3. is this normal that COMPACTING DELETES OLD MSGS?
4. is something corrupt
5. Searched MS knowledgebase and found NOTHING comparable.
6. the compacting messages did NOT cover this occurrence
7. my maintenance file does NOT tell it to delete any files when compacting.
(in fact, all options are unchecked...) SO what happened and why.
8. how to prevent this from happening
9. what is normal compacting function? Assume it just frees up space.
10. it did NOT delete my Delete folder or sent folder, or individual files
within inbox, so I assume it is a corruption.
11. yes, I believe it was space issue. Had loads of msg. on it, but it was a
fraction of what it had been.

did i subscribe to right newsgroup. If not, how do I find OE newsgroup.

Thanks.

Hi, Barbara - actually, the OE newsgroups would be better for this (but are
not easy to find).

microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.outlookexpress.mac for OE for Macintosh

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

A good website for information on OE is:
