Re: Upgrade Mailboxes to Exchange 2003 but keep IM on Exchange 2000
Not sure...I'm sure if you google Exchange IM migration or something that it
will come up, but honestly it's that simple. I have that setup now
(although I'm retiring it over the next week), but it's pretty straight
forward.

Re: Upgrade Mailboxes to Exchange 2003 but keep IM on Exchange 2000
Hmmm, Never noticed that..
I'm running the setup that you are planning. We have one of the DCs that has
the 2000 ESM on it and didn't realize that we never put the 2003 ESM on it.
So I guess we'll have to use that server to enable the IM and the other for
the account creation.
The Setup works pretty good, though I think it is inevitable that we'll have
to install LCS at some point... Exchange 12 probably wont talk well with
2000

Re: Upgrade Mailboxes to Exchange 2003 but keep IM on Exchange 2000
Well it depends on your setup, but from what I can tell you could leave an
Exchange 2000 machine in your Exchange org even if you are running Exchange
2007 everywhere else. As long as it's running just Exchange IM and not
routing mail or anything you should be fine (although honestly some people
will have pre-Exchange 2007 machines to suppose certain mail connectors),
but at some point when support for Exchange 2000 ends then you'll have to
ask yourself if your ready for the move to LCS. Depending on your company
and their use of LCS (which affects the design) it's an entirely different
animal then Exchange IM (at least it is for me because I am using LCS
Enterprise Edition (started with Standard Edition which is very straight
forward)). LCS is 100x more powerful then Exchange IM, but it's also a lot
more complex.

LCS is more Complex? No... Come on... it cant be!!!
Um Yeah I tried installing it once... I'm still not sleeping at night!
Maybe at some point when I have lots of free time I'll try it again...

Re: Upgrade Mailboxes to Exchange 2003 but keep IM on Exchange 2000
To LCS's benefit there is a TON of documentation out there...which is both
good and bad. To learn how to properly deploy an enterprise LCS EE
deployment you end up having to read through 100s of pages of
whitepapers...but in the end its all good.
