ADC Issue
We currently have the following:

Windows server 2003 AD - running in mixed mode.
Windows NT 4.0 sp6 BDC running Exchange 5.5 sp4

A new Windows 2003 server attempting a new installation of Exchange server
2003 to coexist with Exchange 5.5 during the upgrade migration.

I have gone through all of the exchange deployment tools steps and
everything has gone fine until I reached the ADC wizard. When I try and run
step 4, the connection agreement wizard, it asked me to specify the location
of the destination container for new objects and the help screen suggested
pointing to the users container. I did, and get this message:

Warning: The staging area domain is not in native mode. Group membership and
security cannot be properly managed unless the staging area is in a native
mode domain.

I obviously cannot switch to native mode while continuing to support the NT4
BDC, along with a handful of DOS machines using Microsoft Networking to
connect to network resources.

Re: ADC Issue
Hi,

This warning tells you can the ADC can't create Universal Security Groups
for distribution groups in 5.5 that are used for assigning permissions.

You can continue but you will have problems with the permissions on all
public and user folders where distribution groups are using to assign
permissions.

Re: ADC Issue
Thanks for your responce Leif.

So, obviously the best course of action would be to upgrade remaining NT4
BDC's and switch to native, or Server 2003 mode to continue migration.

The catch 22 is that the 5.5 server is running on an NT4 that is a BDC. What
are the recommended steps to address that problem?

Re: ADC Issue
Hi,

Do you have a temporary server on which you could install another copy of
5.5 and then move mailboxes, public folders etc to this new server and then
get rid of the BDC??

Re: ADC Issue
Since I don't need the server to communicate with AD as an NT4 BDC anyway, is
it possible to just go ahead and switch to native (2003) mode without doing
anything to the BDC? Or, will AD not allow it if it sees it in the domain
controller container?

How about using the UPromote utility?

Thanks, Jay

Re: ADC Issue
Hi,

I would then prefer the upromote utility (I haven't tried it myself but I
have heard that it works. Make sure that you have a good backup of the
exchange information store so that you can perform a restore if everything
crashes.
