Shared Diaries
I am being asked to set up a shared diary for a number of people in our
business, so that they can check on each others availabilty.

Could anyone point me to an idiots guide?

People can either share their own calendars, or you can set up a public
calendar. Depends on what you need. For the former, each user needs to
right-click on his/her calendar in outlook, go to sharing, and add the users
or groups they wish - then assign the permissions they wish. Other users
will open the calendar using file | open | other user's folder....
