Duplicate mail forwarded
This is a Windows 2003 SP1 server with patches up to date, Exchange 2003
SP-2.

We are using forwarding rules on the mailboxes to forward messages to
certain user's Blackberry devices. We are getting several messages sent
multiple times (up to 20 at a time). I've looked for a black-hole router,
but didn't find any, but I enabled the black-hole router detection anyway -
no difference.

I've looked in the SMTP logs, and I think I found the entries from a
particular message that was received only once in the user's mailbox, but 3
times at the Blackberry. This message was received at 7:27 and 7:27 AM EST
this morning, but one thing that confuses me about the log entries is that
they are stamped 12:27 and 12:28, unless I'm reading it incorrectly.

Here are the log entries for what I believe is the duplicated message sent
to the Blackberry:

The dates, times, and time zones are set correctly on the Exchange server as
well as the Domain Controllers.

Can anyone give me any ideas as to why the messages are being sent multiple
times, and if my time might be off somewhere? Any help is GREATLY
appreciated, as we're running out of ideas.

RE: Duplicate mail forwarded
I am having exactly the same issue and we've yet to figure it out. We are
using an SBS Windows Server 2003 SP1 server with Exchange 2003 SP2. Same
deal, seemingly randomly duplicated messages on the blackberry devices. When
I forward the messages to another (non-Blackberry) server and then on to
Blackberry.net, no duplication occurs.

RE: Duplicate mail forwarded
I posted this in a different message and got no responce so I figured I would
repost it here since it is about the same issue:

I have read several other people with this problem but have not seem a
solution.

I have a SBS2003 server and it seems that after installing SP2 for Exchange,
I am having problems using the forwarding delivery option to forward messages
to outside contact (specifically a blackberry email address).

The sympton that occurs is that messages pile up on the SMTP queue for
blackberry. The client will have several effects on his blackberry from not
getting a message to getting 40 copies of the same message.

To try to troubleshoot the problem I created a new contact pointing to my
personal email account which is hosted on an Exchange 2003 SP2 server and I
get the following error message:

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

      Subject:	test 12
      Sent:	4/27/2006 8:36 PM

---snip
The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

      Christopher S on 4/27/2006 8:30 PM
The message contains a content type that is not supported
            < mx1.myserver.net #5.6.0 smtp; 554 5.6.0 Message with invalid
header rejected, id=26679-01-11 - MIME error: error: part did not end with
expected boundary>
---end snip

I never get a message other than this. Now I have seen a lot of people
complaining about this and no resolution. I have attempted to try to fix
this by forcing plain text, forcing helo instead of ehelo, disabling filters,
making the contact a member of the domain users group, making sure the
contact is in the same Organizational unit.

This is a reproducable problem on multiple exchage SP2 servers. If I go to
a server that does not have sp2, it work fine.

Any suggestions? This is driving me crazy!

RE: Duplicate mail forwarded
The only way that I have been able to solve the issue is to send mail through
another SMTP server before it goes on to Blackberry. Obviously not all SBS
Exchange 2003 servers do this because at one point I forwarded messages
through another SBS2003 Exchange server and the issue was resolved. At this
point I am actually forwarding all mail bound for Blackberry users via a
SendMail server hosting my web site. The probelm is clearly with the Exchange
servers, but what it is and how to fix it seem completely unknown. Until
someone does figure it out, I will continue to send mail bound for blackberry
clents through an aternate SMTP server.

RE: Duplicate mail forwarded
We are having the exact same issue, as I see a lot of people are having based
on reading the forums. I haven't seen any post where anyone has any type of
resolution.
Is there anyone at Microsoft that is aware of a fix for the issue with 2003
SP1 and Exchange SP2 causing the problems when forwarding to a BlackBerry
address?

I'd check the SMTP Protocol Log to see what's happening. The ony time
I've seen any "duplicate message" problems is when the receiving
server says it's had some sort of problem and to retry the message
later. That problem can be a 4xx response code to the end of the DATA
portion of the message, or it can be a timeout where the 2xx response
is never received by Exchange. When either of those conditions arise,
Exchange correctly resends the message.

In the case of never receiving the 250, the condition is usually that
the receiving server closes the connection too soon -- or you've got a
bad tcpip.sys module on your Exchange server, but that's an O/S issue.

Messages, in both of those situation, will correctly remain in the
delivery queue.

What version and SP of the O/S are you running. If it's W2K3 SP1, make
sure you've installed the updated tcpip.sys. This KB identifies one
build of tcpip.sys that fixes problems with timeouts, there are also
mor recent builds than this one:

Installing security update MS05-019 or Windows Server 2003 Service
Pack 1 may cause network connectivity between clients and servers to
fail [898060]

This sure looks like a problem with connctivity, not SMTP. Although,
I've seen third-party spam filters screw things up, too. SurfControl
5.0 used to leave off the trailing "--" on the last MIME boundary,
causing all sorts of problems. If you're using that, contact them and
get the fix for this problem.

Have you ever got to look at the message as it leaves the Exchange
server to know if it was constructed properly? Have you removed any
3rd-party software to verify that something other than Exchange and
Windows wasn't at fault?

It's not problem on any of the E2K3 SP2 servers I run. Never has been.

Assuming there's something special about a "blackberry address", what
would that be? Exchange sees this no differently to any other SMTP
address.

Does that other server repair the missing MIME terminator? Does it
even care if the message is constructed properly?

What other software that touches outbound SMTP traffic runs on the SBS
machine? As you point out, this isn't a problem with every Exchange
server.

Is SurfControl used on this machine?

Thanks for the response, I'll go that route for now...
