I currently have a domain controller that acts as a DNS server and that currently houses a full Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. I recently installed another DC to replicate the AD, in case the first one goes down. I need the same failover with the Exchange - if the first DC goes down, I know I can depend on the replica computer to continue full mail operations until I get the first DC up and running. Is there a whitepaper or a step-by-step guide that can walk me through the process of replicating the MS Exchange Server onto an existing dc and proper DNS configuration? Thanks.
Hi, Exchange server doesn't have a builtin way of replicating mailboxes to another server. You will either have to look into microsoft clustering (which requires enterprise edition of both windows server and exchange server) and which can cause more problems if managed by someone who doesn't know about clustering or 3-party solutions like doubletake. For many companies the most cost effective solution is to have a spare server and then practice disaster recovery. In this way you can have a new exchange server in the air within a few hours of a disaster.
