I have an Exchange server 2003 and my ISP was hosting our website and managing all our public DNS entries until they went down. I have to scramble and find a new ISP and after two days of downtime our emails started flowing again and it seems trouble free but when I do a DNS lookup with several sites like http://www.dnsstuff.com/ the report I get is No MX records exist. I have spoken several times to my new ISP and they assure me that they have created the necessary entries, but all I see is an A Record for my email server. My question is, could my exchange server function properly without an MX Record? We only have an internal (private) DNS, I could add the MX Record to this DNS but I’m not sure if this would work or if it does, is this private DNS server going to get hit by queries from outside? Or does the MX record must exist in public domain and in that case should I keep insisting to my ISP to create the record? Thanks in advance, Mike

Yes, but it isn't advisable and you may not receive all mail. > We only have an internal (private) DNS, I could add the MX > Record to this DNS but I'm not sure if this would work or if it does, > is this private DNS server going to get hit by queries from outside?
