Exch 2k/5.5 Festive Nightmare...
Hi,

I am trying to recover from a "small" (not) folly (failed to make a
backup... have to build new) and I'd be grateful for any help.

Situation:
Have an Exch 5.5 server (running Win2kS)
Had an Exch 2k server, correctly joined to the site containing the Exch 5.5
server. Replication etc all working well.
Exch 2k server has gone west and cannot be recovered / re-instated...
(completely ungraceful loss of the DC etc)

Built a new Win2k machine and joined existing domain
Ran ForestPrep / DomainPrep iaw the MS guide to upgrading from Exch 5.5 to
Exch 2k
.... wasn't prompted for a site to join...
Trying to get the Ech 2k server and the Exch 5.5 server to talk so that I
can replicate (and it has to be "replicate") public folder contents from 5.5
to 2k
Created updated ADCs for Addresses and PFs etc

Issues / things:
Used ADSIEdit to lose the ConfigCA to the dead server
Created an SRS instance on the new server and got it to talk to the Exch 5.5
server... It causes the Exch 2k server to appear in the Exch 5.5 admin as a
server in the correct site but the only child object below the server is an
instance of the "Microsoft DSA"
In the Exch 5.5 adminstrator app, when you look at the public folders, the
only server that is shown as being able to host a replica is the Exch 5.5
srvr.

PF replication is what I need, so...
- Am I doomed? (in which case, I'll create another 5.5 server and upgrade
it in place)
- Is it possible that I've mucked up the replacement PF ADC instance?
("Windows Server" is set to be the Exch 2k server and the "Exchange Server"
is set to be the Exch 5.5 server)
- Something else... E.g. tear down the Exch 2k server, then tear down all of
the ADC entries, uninstall the ADC itself and then start again.

Grateful for any thoughts about this.

Compliments of the season.

JC

Hi,

I would first try to remove all Exchange 2000 traces from active directory
(and of course the new server) and then start all over. This might help:

Re: Exch 2k/5.5 Festive Nightmare...
Leif,

Thanks for replying. I think that's what I ended up doing although more by
brute force...

- I built a new box (Win2k DC/GC) and installed Exch5.5 server and then
hunted for any keys in AD related to Exchange... There was one MSExchangeSAA
(Any idea what that does?)
- I then went back to the original domain and used ADSI Edit to remove all
other Exchange-related keys and entries including those for the organisation
- and then started again...

"Interestingly", I managed another screw-up by installing only the E2K ESM
and not E2KS itself and then trying to replicate off the public folders from
the Exch5.5 server... It took running the DS/IS Consistency Checker on the
5.5 server to recover from that.

I'm not that my setup is entirely stable but it's good enough for what I
need (which is to break an existing dependency on the use of
EntryID/ObjectID in a PF as a primary key in a database.... madness).

Happy New Year and thanks again.

John
