An unusual Exchange 5.5 to 2k upgrade
Hi,

I have very little experience with Exchange, but am trying to pull off a
little bit of upgrade magic in my (small) company and I think I need some
assistance.

In essence what I want to do is migrate about a dozen users, plus public
folders, distribution lists, external recipients, etc. from an Exchange
5.5 installation on NT4 to an Exchange 2000 installation on Win2k (on new
hardware) where the users already have accounts in the Win2k Active
Directory.

From reading the various Microsoft guides, I think that the sticking point
is going to be the fact that the Win2k domain is running in mixed mode. If
I read it correctly, this is going to prevent me from matching the NT4
accounts to the AD accounts by updating the SIDHistory property with AD
Migration Tool. Am I right?

Is there another way to do what I want, without manually setting up
everything in the Exchange 2000 server and then migrating everyone's mail
using eseutil?

(More details of the current setup are included below)

Thanks,
Rodd

Here is a point-by-point summary of our situation:

* A Win2k domain controller for DomainA which is running AD in mixed mode.

* An NT4 server which is the PDC for its own domain (DomainB) and runs
Exchange 5.5

* Everyone in the company has an account in DomainA. This is their "real"
account

* Everyone in the company also has an account in DomainB with the same
username as their account in DomainA.

* Everyone has a mailbox on the Exchange 5.5 server

* Most users have the same password in DomainB as DomainA, allowing them
access to their mailbox via pass-through authentication.

* All workstations are members of DomainA

* Almost all workstations run XP Pro, but there is at least one which is
running NT4 Workstation.

Re: An unusual Exchange 5.5 to 2k upgrade
Hi,

You could install the Exchange active director connector. Have this
connector create contacts in active directory and then use the active
directory cleanup wizard merge a contact with an account.

You can then install exchange 200x in the same exchange organization as the
existing 5.5 server and move mailboxes to the new server.

Leif

PS: Best to test the above in a test environment if possible.
