The remote server did not respond to a connection attempt
Hi,

I'm running IIS/5 with the SMTP virtual server. I'm receiving a number of
these in my event(system) logs and I'm having a hard time troubleshooting
them. Many of these errors are probably Out of Office replies to SPAM or
something similar. There are a few in particular that are to customer's
domains. These are large companies we're sending to. We are using a static
IP, FQDN, reverse DNS and MX records. I don't know why they're failing.
The large majority of our mail goes through without a hitch, but these few
are problematic. Just to give you a lay of the land, we are using Exchange
2000 on a separate server from the SMTP virtual server, we configured the
Exchange SMTP connector to point to another W2K IIS/5 server and that server
is supposed to be sending the mail out directly. We do not have a smarthost
configured under the Advanced / Delivery Tab. We do however, have a smart
host configured under the domains/remote domain, to point to the Exchange
server. I have no reason to believe that this problem is on our side but
I'm curious to know how I can view the connection details or logs between
the IIS /SMTP server and the remote domain that I'm sending mail to. I have
enabled logging and while it logs, it doesn't appear to be logging anything
of real great importance (i.e. there are just basic commands). Please help.

Thanks,
Jody Cohen

See attached log file for more info. 10.0.0.7 is the address of our
internal Exchange server.
