how to know the Size of the private store? (Exchange 2003 standard edition)
Hi,

I'l trying to determinate the size of the private store. I'd like to know if
the edb file size is the same than the size of the private store, or there
is a different way of knowing its real size.

I'm saying this because our total exchange backup takes 12 gigabytes, where
our edb file is 9 gigabytes big.

Thanks!!!

Re: how to know the Size of the private store? (Exchange 2003 standard edition)
OK - this might sound a bit basic - but this is the way I have done it.

Right Click the Mailboxes icon in your mailbox store and select "Export
List"

Export to tab delimited text. Open this file in Excel, and select the
default mappings.

Then use Excel to add up your user mailbox sizes to give you an idea of
total usage.

Regarding your backups - you may find the backups are larger as,
depending on the backup software you use, you may also be backing up
the transaction logs and mailbox instances seperately as well.

Hope this helps!

And how big is the STM that is partnered with the EDB.
Also, you talk about one EDB. If you just did a default backup of the
box you will have the Private and the Public, that's another EDB
altogether and another STM attached to that EDB.

Tot up all four files and see what you get.

Re: how to know the Size of the private store? (Exchange 2003 standard edition)
Thanks Mark,

So, when speaking about the 16 gigabytes limit, this limit applies to the
edb file?

Yes, our Backup includes logically all the TSLogs, abd the public store
(that is quite small), but anyway how to know the real size of the database?
the size that MS speaks about when taliking about the 16 gigabyte limit?

The 16GB limit applies to each pair (EDB and STM) Each pair can total
16GB, so you do have 32GB of storage but can only have one private and
one public store.

The 16GB is the limit of the cumulative file sizes (EDB + STM) If you
look at the event log you will see event id 1221 which will tell you
how much free space is inside the database (and you do the maths to
see how much mail you have)

Re: how to know the Size of the private store? (Exchange 2003 standard edition)
Hi again, Mark,

I think there is a misunderstanding, the event 1221 just says the freespace
there is after the defragmentation (so teh space the defragmentation
cleared) , not the total free space...

Hi,

Mark is telling you the truth. The 1221 event tells you how much free space
there is inside the database.

Sorry to disagree:

Event ID 1221 and Database Free Space

            Exchange Server
            Compatibility Information

            Exchange
            Server Version
            Compatibility 5.5 Yes
            2000 Yes
            2003 Yes
A common posting on newsgroups and forums from new Exchange
administrators is when they look the event logs on their Exchange server and
find this:

            Event Type: Information
            Event Source: MSExchangeIS Mailbox Store
            Event Category: General
            Event ID: 1221
            Date: 01/01/2005
            Time: 00:04:16
            User: N/A
            Computer: SERVER
Description: The database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store
(SERVER)" has 3.4 megabytes of free space after online defragmentation has
terminated.

They then post a message about their Exchange server running out of
space, and how to increase it.
There are a number of issues here, which will be dealt with
separately.

      What does this message mean?

What it means is that Exchange has carried out some routine
maintenance on the Exchange database. Any old data that is past the delete
thresholds has been deleted from the database.
The space it has left behind has then been consolidated, in to "white
space". The size of the database hasn't changed - there is just some space
within the database.
This "white space" will be used by Exchange first, before expanding
the database any larger.

Re: how to know the Size of the private store? (Exchange 2003 standard edition)
Hi,

Please elaborate (and read your last post again). Where it is we disagree -
the event tells us how much free space available inside the database after
an online defragmentation.

As I read Simon Butlers explanation he totally agrees.

Leif

ops, yes, its true, I'm sorry!!!!

It said how much space INSIDE teh DDBB there was.

You both are right!!
