RE: Looking to install FE server
Hi Irene,
Thanks for posting here!
This question appears to be more consulting in nature. Although this
newsgroup is here to provide break/fix resolution, we are happy to provide
general information and suggestions on it here and you may receive
suggestions from other partners on this topic both here and in the public
newsgroup for this product.
We would also like to introduce you to the Customer Service and Support
(CSS) Advisory Services team.
Advisory Services is a remotely delivered, hourly fee-based, consultative
support option that provides a comprehensive result beyond your break-fix
product maintenance needs. This support option includes working with the
same technician for assistance with issues like product migration, code
review, or new program development.

General Info:
==========
I have gone through your post; however, I am afraid I am not quite clear
about your concerns. Let me try to answer as below.
First of all, in order to implement Front-End (FE) and Back-End (BE)
Topology, there are at least two Exchange Servers with one as Front-End
Server and another as Back-End Server.
After configuring Front-End and Back-End Topology, we recommend placing FE
Server in DMZ area and BE in LAN so that FE can provide universal URL for
all Internet OWA and OMA even RPC Over HTTP access. During the process, FE
will redirect all access request to BE server, which doesn't require user
with permission to access BE Server.
It is also recommended to configure SSL on FE Server; however you do not
need to configure SSL on back-end servers when using a front-end server,
because the front-end server does not support using SSL to communicate with
back-end servers.
All your questions are covered by the White Paper below.
Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange 2000 Server Front-End and Back-End
Topology

If you have further concern, please contact our Advisory Team for more
information since consulting question is out of our newsgroup support
boundary. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation. Have a nice day!
