instant messaging usage
we are using the Exchange 2000 instant messaging service with Messenger 4.7.
We are planning on replacing it with LCS 2005. Is there any way I can tell
from the logs on the Exchange 2000 server which people are actually using IM
(and not just having the Messenger client start up and enumerate contacts)?

Isn't RVP logged to it's own set of logs?
You could filter that one out.

Also, does it matter? RVP and SIP are two completely separate beasts.
If you have a business case to go with LCS 2005 then the number of
users on Exchange 2000 IM is irrelevant because the two are so
different.
You can't make calls off-net, or audio/video conference and there are
no 3rd party enhancements such as MCS5100 or OpenScape with E2K IM
etc. etc.

Re: instant messaging usage
Mark - thanks for replying. Our Exchange admin is on vacation this week, so
I need to ask some "non-technical" questions in his stead. What is RVP and
where are its logs stored?

IT matters not because I need to know who is using Exchange 2000 IM to make
my business case, but because I want to contact them to let them know we will
be shutting down the service they are using, and to get some more information
about how they use it to help market the new version to a wide audience.

Thanks for your help

The RVP is the Rendezvous Protocol rather than the Session Initiation
Protocol as used in LCS 2005.
Look on the properties of the RVP Virtual server in Exchange System
Manager. It's been a while and I don't have a legacy Exchange 2000
server to hand to direct you to the exact place unfortunately.
