SMTP is not relaying messages from outsite authenticated users
Hi, all!

I have an Exchange 2000 Server on Windows 2k.
POP3 is fine but SMTP works only for computers within the same subnet
even if the sender is authenticated.

I setup the relay for authenticated users (not computer specific).
There's no firewall in the network.

It used to work but since months ago it hasn't been working.
Does anyone know what's wrong?

TIA.

What specific errors do the clients get when trying to relay? Have you
double-checked the relay connection settings on your virtual SMTP server?

Well, that is a very very bad thing. You need one. No way of knowing what
unwanted visitors you have already had on your network :(

What has happened since?
What SP on E2k?
What SP on W2k?

I presume that only *external* users are collecting Exchange mail via POP,
right? (I wouldn't want to use POP at all; I'd rather have them use OWA, but
for internal users, *definitely* not POP/IMAP as you miss out on most of the
Exchange features).

Honestly, if it were me, I'd have any external POP users use their own
ISP's SMTP server and disable relay entirely, as even authenticated relay
can be fairly easily exploited by spammers.

Hi, Lanwench!
Thank you for the reply.
I'm providing more information.

Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes
for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of
inactivity. Account: 'mail.camsight.com', Server:
'email-server.camsight.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No,
Error Number: 0x800CCC0F

Right. I'll setup a firewall.

Nothing as far as I know.

SP3 for E2k.
SP4 for W2k.

Well... not really.
POP3 for everyone.
Actually all I need is POP3 and SMTP.

I'll think of it.

I just talked with SBC technitian.
I suspected that SBC was blocking port 25, which turned out not to be
the case.
Probably the server is not accepting packets from outside.

Do you have any idea?

Thanks.

See if http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;813514 helps

Even a cheap & cheerful NetGear/Linksys would be OK. I prefer Sonicwalls if
you're going to go that route & can't afford a PIX, etc....but something
needs to be set up at the perimeter of your network to block all inbound
traffic you don't absolutely need to let in, and perhaps all outbound
traffic you don't absolutely need to let out.

You also need good Exchange-aware antivirus software that can scan all
inbound/outbound mail & all mailboxes, and block dangerous attachment types.

Gremlins?

Why?

Then you picked a pretty complicated/expensive mail server, if that's all
you need. Have you looked into what you're missing? Try opening up mailboxes
in Outlook, or even OWA, and compare features. Calendars, shared folders,
etc. ?
