Unable to access or delete mail
Prosperous new year to you and yours. I have a problem that I am hoping you
can provide some assistance with. I have an Exchange 2000 install running on
Windows 2000 server. The database is corrupt in that users cannot seem to
access some files or even to delete them. The exchange had recently crashed
as free space on the drive decreased to a critical level. I used the command
switch in eseutil.exe to rebuild the priv files. (I was on vacation
unfortunately) As you can understand this is leading to the size of the
database growing too fast. I attempted to run the eseutil.exe but was
blocked when the system returned a message saying that certain files were in
use; this was after I had stopped all the relevant services.

Now, the drive that the database resides on only has about 300 MB free. I
have mapped the drive to use my system as a network drive for an offline
remote drive for the defrag. I have been reading Microsoft’s TechNet site
regarding ISINTEG.EXE. Am I correct in assuming that this utility can help
repair the logical corruption in the database?
Thanks.

Nigel

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
ISINTEG will attempt to fix a corrupt or non mounting database. I would
strongly suggest running ISINTEG to see if you can get the database mounted.

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
Hi John. Are there any issues I should be aware of with running ISINTEG? I
have a recent backup of the database but I assume that this backup will have
some level of corruption. Also, would this corruption be the reason that the
ESEUTIL is not running? Thanks.

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
ISINTEG utiility is used for testing fixing a corrupt database file. Now,
with that being said, it may attempt to delete records and tables in the
corrupt database to get it back to a working condition so you can mount it.
Always good to have a backup just in case but if the corruption carried to
the backup then it might not be of any help. ISINTEG is fairly safe to use
and I would recommend it as a first step to getting your database back to a
normal state.

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
Hey John. I'm having a little trouble getting the ISINTEG to run. I'm
trying to map it to run on a network drive, v to a shared folder named
defrag. The following is the syntax that I'm using:

isinteg exchange2000 -fix -t v:\ -defrag

The name of my exchange server is exchange 2000. Is my command line syntax
correct?

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
Nigel,

Lets step back a moment. Did you ever get ESEUTIL to run correctly with /P
switch? If not, rerun it on a computer other than Exchange since you stated
you were slim on space,

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=244525

Start with integrity check,
Eseutil /G

Then Repair
/P

As you can see both the /g and /p commands were completed. What i need to
do now is to run the isinteg. Now, bothe the .edb and .stm were rebuilt.
After this rebuild is when access was blocked to certain items. Hope this
helps.

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
Hi,

How to run isinteg is described here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;301460

The parameters would be "isinteg -s servername -fix -test alltests"

Run isinteg until number of errors reported are zero or constant.

Re: Unable to access or delete mail
Hey Leif

Thanks for your response. My question is, I have only 400 MB available on
my exchange drive. I'm trying to get a handle on the syntax to run the
ISINTEG on a mapped network drive, but this is where I'm getting problems.
The drive that I have mapped is a v: with a shared folder named defrag. Or
would i be able to run the ISINTEG with that amount of space available?
