Mounting a Exch5.5 mailstore on a 2000 or 2003 Exch installation
Hi,

I have a copy of a Exch 5.5 mailstore restored from an old backup, we no
longer have an Exch 5.5 installation as we have upgraded to 2003. I need to
mount this store in order to get some historical emails.

Is there a way that I can mount the store on out existing 2003 installation.
I don't want to have to rebuild a test environment to set up a Exch 5.5
installation.

Thanks in advance
Richard

You'll need to build a new 5.5 server with the correct org site,
service pack etc or use 3rd party tools such as from Quest.

I have had to do this before when migrated a mailbox and it corrupted it,
however I always got the priv from a 5.5 Exchange server after doing a
restore.

After you get the PRIV you can mount it as a recovery storage group DB. The
issue is you have to mount an empty RSG with the same DB. Then you have to
run eseutil /p /createstm to create the STM file so 2003 can mount it.

You can then try Exmerging them to PST.

It can be done if you have no other options, and you know how to use RSGs.
Restoring the original Exchange server in a test environment with a DC might
be easier in this case.

Forgot to add you need to create a production DB with the same name. Then
create the RSG DB from that. Don't mount it and select this db can be
overwritten by restore. Switch the files delete the STM of the RSG DB (New
One).

Run ESEUTIL /p /Createstm (just do a lookup on the complete syntax). Make
sure you don't run it on the C: drive.

Let that run and try to mount it, it should mount at that point.
