Problem sending mail from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003

We are working on the migration from Exchange 5.5 to Exch 2003.


We have two domains structure and are running Windows
2003 Active Directory.
Microsoft Active Directory Connector is installed on the first Exch 2003 
server  to
synchronize information between Exchange 5.5 and Active
Directory .
We have two Exchange 5.5 Servers in a single site.
We have installed a Exchange 2003  Server and a
Exchange 2003 two nodes cluster. 2 Active nodes and 1 passive.


Here are the configurations:

1. Exchange 5.5 SP4  running on Windows 2000 SP4.

2. First Exchange 2003 SP1 server, which is running ADC and SRS  joined to
Exchange 5.5 organization.

3. Second Exchange 2003 SP1 server(2-nodes cluster) as  mailbox storage 
server joined to
Exchange 5.5 origination afterwards.

Population of NT 4.0 to AD and ADC  are all working fine.

Moved mailbox to the first exchange 2003 (master runing SRS and ADC), all 
the incoming/outgoing
and internal/external communication are all OK.

When I move mailboxes to the second exchange server. Exch 5.5 client can
send email to exch 2003 client without a problem and external
incoming/outgoing email work fine as well.


But when I am trying to send emails to an exchange 5.5 client, from an
exchange 2003 client. turned on email tracking on exch
2000 box, and get the following "message rerouted to site
connector <domain> (originally unknown). It's getting sent
to the right NT4.0 domain (so it seems), but the exch 5.5
client never sees the email.

I checked the queue on the Exch 2003 side, all of them are stuck in the
X.400 Exchange MTA outgoing queue. The queue state is showing as retry
instead of ready.

Then I configured MTA logging to maximum on exch 2003 cluster. I found some 
289 and 1294 warnings in event log. From the TechNet it seems slow mail 
flow. It sounds not for my
case. Exch1st and 2nd both on the same LAN with  Exch 5.5. And I test RPC 
and ping are all fine.

To figure out if it is speical problem for cluster, I installed two more 
exch 2003 servers. They both have same problems.

In a word, as long as I move mailbox to the Exch 2003 which is runing SRS 
and ADC, no problem. When I move them back to other Exch 2k3 servers, 
problem will happen for sending mail from exch 5.5 clients to exchange 2k3.

Urgent! any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
