On-Line store defrag
Hi,

On one of my exchange servers I am seeing several instances each night where
the event 700/701 online defrag messages are logged for the Public store
pub1.edb), but no events are logged for the mailbox store (priv1.edb). On
other exchange servers I see both. How can I tell if the priv1 store is
being de-fragged :?

Thanks,

Gee

How many 1221 events do you get and are any of them against the priv?

Re: On-Line store defrag
Mark,

Thanks,

I get one for each pass of the pub.edb (3 times per night at 01:00, 02:00
and 03:00) and none for the priv1.edb. I have checked the maintenance window
on the store and it is set (01:00 - 05:00) but nothing appears to be
happening. The backups (veritas withy EX agent) finish successfully by 01:00
so there is no overlap.
I have just tried setting the IS main window to a different time (2-6) to
see if that kick-starts it.

Re: On-Line store defrag
Mark,

Just checked today and I can see all the IS PF Maintenance tasks start and
finish but no IS Mailbox Store IS tasks start. e.g the PF expiry and
cleanups run but not the Deleted mailboxes etc for the IS.

Regards,

Gee

Re: On-Line store defrag
So to confirm, no 1221 events against the Private?

Re: On-Line store defrag
Mark,

That's correct. Nothing at all for the private Mailbox Store. I also tried
to initiate a manual mailbox cleanup from the Exchange Manager console but
it just hung for quite a while and appeared to do nothing. All the registry
entries for the IS main seem to be present. I found a KB that describes a
situation where these symptoms may occur if the IS is started during a
maintenance window that rfequires the IS to be re-started. I am hoping a
restart of the IS may spark something into life.

Thanks for your time,

Gee

Re: On-Line store defrag
An interesting one.
Talk a little about your backup regime and any a/v scanning you have
going on. Is the backup of the PF and the Private in the same job or
are there two jobs separated by some time?

Re: On-Line store defrag
Mark,

The backup is Veritas Bexec 9.1 Sp2 and runs each night at 23:00. It backs
up the Mailbox Store and the Public Store using the Exchange Agent in the
same job. That job also does a brick-level PF backup as there are only a
very small no of PFs. This completes successfully within an hour or so. The
AV is Mcaffee Groupshield 5.2 SP2.
