Information Store Corruption: 478
Hi all,

I've only discovered now that the Information Store is throwing error
478 about checksum mismatchtes when doing a full backup. To my shame
this went unnoticed for almost 2 months now.
Since no user has been complaining about anything Exchange/Outlook
related I'm a bit confused as to what effects this database corruption
has.
All backups I own are not 'restorable' due to the error 478. What
options do I have?

1. Check for incompatible third party software
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=840013

2. Use Exmerge to copy all data ouf of IS and then back into a new
store
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259688/

3. Create new store and move the mailboxes to it from within AD/XCHG.

4. Check for hardware failures, event sinks and finally hard repair the
database
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=810333

5. Hard repair with Eseutil /p
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259851/

What option is most likely to succeed without failure (exmerge, move
boxes or hard repair), since doing a hard repair is often associated
with guaranteed data loss?

Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Re: Information Store Corruption: 478
1. By all means check.
2. Do this anyway just in case. A safe backup is a good backup.
3. Probably the best plan.
4. Check sounds good. Hard repair does not.
5. That's up to you. I wouldn't.

478 could be a SCSI controller problem (from memory it was what threw mine
last time. I changed the terminator and things became good again. But ensure
you get at least an exmerge first before doing anything.

If you are using BE for a backup, try ntbackup just in case. I've seen one
of them fail where the other one works. Also, if using ntbackup, try an
ntbackup to disk instead of tape. See if that helps.

Re: Information Store Corruption: 478
Nick,

Thanks a lot for your input. I've already ran an exmerge export just to
be sure.
All third-party software has been removed, too.
Actually the error occurs with ntbackup.

I'll clone the box to new (isolated) hardware and see how options 3&5
work out.
Hapy to hear that you suggest 3 would be the best plan, I'll try this
first.

Yet maybe you (or someone) else can guide me a bit more about why an
exmerge export works if there is corruption within the data store?

Of course I'll have to consider the possibility of a hardware defect.

thanks again!

Re: Information Store Corruption: 478
Exmerge will only take clean stuff out of the DB.

Re: Information Store Corruption: 478
Is this Exchange 2000 or 2003?
In Exchange 2003 you can run eseutil /k on the db to check the page level
integrity of the DB.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;825088
I suggest that you so this.

If you are getting checksum errors then you need to look at why this
happened. It is possible that there are 3rd party apps causing this but it
is more likely that it is a poorly performing piece of hardware.
You must determine the root cause of this before moving users to a new store
otherwise it is highly likely that this will happen again. Scan your system
logs and/or any hardware logging to see if there were any issues with the
controllers/disks. If you find issues then work with your HW vendor to
resolve them.

Hard repair is an absolute last resort (when you cannot mount the DBs and
you have no backup)
